We live in a northern mill village and there is a lake or mill pond nearby.

Some of the locals call this lake a 'lodge'.. where does this come from?

Since the mid 19th century in Lancashire, a 'lodge' has been a reservoir of water to be used for mill purposes. It was also used to mean a subterranean reservoir in mines. Perhaps it was connected with the concept of 'lodging' something as a sort of deposit, as in putting money into a bank...ie retained for a specific purpose, as the water in a lodge clearly was.
Would there be any connection with the time when beavers lived in Britain. Beavers' homes are called lodges and beavers dam streams to form ponds
