(Wed 12:30 03/Nov/04)The original use of the word 'scot' in this sense, dating back to the 13th century, was as a payment, especially towards covering the cost of food and entertainment. In today's terms, it was rather like paying one's contribution into a general kitty. Only later did it take on the idea of a tax and, as such, it was used for a variety of services provided...eg to pay for a town's bailiffs etc.
