A work colleague just asked me where the phrase 'up the duff' comes from. Can anybody help?

Wow, squarebear how quick were u! Many thanks.
Explains what it means but not were it comes from. Only reason I mention it. Duff is my maiden name, so get regularley p**d off with miss use of my surname. IE It's Duff meaning it don't work, or up the duff, meaning pregnant. can someone please answer the question, where does it come from?
