Stink is a euphemism for s**t, as in "s**t off a shovel"

Yep.. or even "greased weasel sh*t" meaning a very rapid removal of materiel.... (note the spelling there lol)

It first showed up in reference to running in R C Sherriff's Journey's End, which appeared in 1929. It later came to be applied to anything fast-moving, such as rain, horse-riding, working etc. I imagine it derived from the fact that smells do tend to travel fairly rapidly and all-pervasively!
