Why did you have them done Rowan- curiosity? Was it expensive

I had mine done years ago and now I am a mongrel.

I'd like mine done out of curiosity..

Interesting.  Was it expensive!  I know there's a lot of French because one grandmother has a French father  but who knows whether he was pure French?  I also know there are Scots and Germans on my father's side.  I would like to know.  Our son would be a real mixture!!

I had mine done simply because Mum lied to me all my life about who my Dad was.
I got
36% Scotland
27% England and North Western Europe
plus 4 other regions

I did my own.

I'm white / pink skinned with blue eyes.

100% rift valley Africa.

no English ancestry?

There are different tests that go back different periods. Mine seem similar to yours, a few centuries. My OH got one going back to the Rift Valley, and with a stop to pick up some Denisovan DNA from somewhere round Russia (but less than average Neanderthal).

Also, they may well update their results in a year or two, as they get more results in that allow them to refine the figures. (This will also vary depending on how big the company who did yours is. The more customers, the more accurate - in theory.) I had ancestors from Bulgaria and Gabon at one stage, who have since vanished.

That's a big mix . 😊

I used My Heritage,(£35) just curiosity following a bit of family gossip. Based in the USA  but I might get it 're done with Ancestry  as they seem to break  the results down  further.    The results make sense  to some extent as a lot of my family are from Essex, and East Anglia so Scandinavians and North Western Europeans would be fairly common in those areas.   The Irish, Scottish Welsh thing  ties in  with the family stories of arrest grandmother who took in Irish lodgers during the war...

My commiserations. 0% English then.

We were bought 23andMe DNA kits for Christmas a couple of years ago. I found it mildly interesting, can't remember the details about where I'm from but it seems I have about 2000 relatives, only one of whom I actually know. And the list just keeps getting longer 🙄

Can these unknown relatives contact you, Vagus?  I'd hate that

They could if I put my contact details up. But I don't.

These DNA tests don’t necessarily prove your ancestry.

Basically the DNA test looks at a sequence of your chromosome genetic markers and compares it to common chromosome sequences within known ethnic groups, living today – and makes the false claim that this proves you have some ancestry connection with a particular geographic location.

This youtube video explains more, and is well worth a watch if you have had such a test done or are considering one.

The ethnicity results are only as good as the core database. As more people test, your results may change.

I've been studying genetic dna for about 4 years now. Ive found that the genetic mix constantly changes, this is as more people test. However, by using DNA and some indepth paper research I have been able to identify my previously unknown g grsndfather.

I clearly don't have the gene (see what I did there!) that makes me the slightest bit curious about my ancestors, or where they may be from.

I can't see it making a moment's difference to who I am.

Anyone who is interested care to explain what I might be missing?

AH. No. It is something that interests you or it doesn't. If you want to know its a bit of fun and an interesting hobby but if you are not bothered it matters not. It's a bit like any interest or hobby. Nothing changes as a result but different people enjoy different things.

I've read that 23andMe, and similar, have thrown up some problems with people finding that their Dad is not actually their dad.

How can these companies come up with that, unless 'Dad' also sends his DNA stuff in?

Cloverjo. Ill explain that tomorrow.  Im on my phone now rather than my laptop and I struggle on my phone.

I’m also interested in that explanation, since it seems impossible to me.
