It means not to worry about something - literally to forget about it. If you say it with an Italian American mafia type accent, it still means the same things - you just sound slightly silly!

It has many differant meanings, depending on the tone and context it is used in.  It could mean what you just said is a forbiden thought or fighting words and if you bring it up again then you could be dead (shut up!!), if said sharply and directly.  It sometimes means you over thinking and it just simply does't matter so dismiss the thought (nevermind or whatever), if said carelessly and indirectly.  Other times it means its a secrete ment for only you to know and not to speak of it to anyone else so keep it quiet(hush, hush or mums the word),  if spoken softly with very stern and very direct eye contact.
