The usual translation is: 'A journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.' It was said by the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao-tze (or Laozi or Lao Zi or Lao-Tzu) who lived around 550BC. However it has also been credited to the late Chinese leader Mao Zedong (or Mao Tse Tung) and almost every country has a saying so similar that it claims this one as its own.
