The term was invented by the marketing departments of wi-fi equipment manufacturers. It is, notionally, short for "wireless fidelity", on the analogy of hi-fi for "high fidelity" audio.

It doesn't really stand for anything. It just sounded good as a marketing soundbite as folk had got used to the HiFi term in the 60s (High Fidelity stereo music kit). Wi clearly suggesting Wireless, folk assume the Fi still stands for Fidelity.
