No way!............I would die!..........In my childhood we had nothing like Central Heating, or even Electricity till I was about 4 years old!......We lived in the country, in a cottage, and it was warm and cosy, but I could not go back to those days now!...............

yes, have done - lived in Africa in the 70's - had two kids and hubby was off fighting the terrorists (akafreedom fighters) - lived in a farmhouse with no mod cons.
It would have to be socks, lots of jumpers. hot water bottles and early nights for me, During the day going out to warm shops. I used to know a lady (single) from work, who stayed on after her retirement date for as long as she could. She told me she saved on the Gas and Electric for a start, she did sod all at work.

Whenever I read either history or period novels-I try to put myself in it...hence this query. I wonder if we've all most likely gotten spoiled very quickly-2 generations?
Me more so than you Brits....I grew up in the hottest house imaginable...
I once lived in a flat that got so cold in winter there was ice on the inside of the windows. I wouldn't like to go back to living like that.

Oh pasta, I lived in the country in North Wales, we had ice on the inside of the windows every Winter, we had a coal fire, which we all sat around in the mornings and evenings, and then it was lots of blankets on our beds, and hot water bottles!.....the blankets were so heavy that we couldn't move in our beds, but we were warm, eventually!..................

I'm in Plymouth.......Devon,carmalee.....but I grew up outside 35 miles NYC.
We're living without the heating at the moment as the the pump has gone and we're waiting for a replacement, It's bloody cold as we only have one slim oil filled plug in radiatior which I'm using in the hall to heat the upstairs, it's not that bad, I grew up without central heating.
I thought I had it hard. Seems lots of others were shivering and freezing too. Misery loves company :-)

As I said-our house when I was growing up was always HOT!...but NY winters being what they are-jack frost was on the windows every morning, and laundry on the line was hard as a rock with ice.
Ok Pasta, Plymouth is a lovely place, been there lots of times, warmer than North Wales too, I am now in South Wales, which is warmer too thankfully!...............
