I can only remember that Rolf Harris re-painted it but it is of a battlescene with a load of people and a large flag... there may also be a man in it with a very white long-sleve shirt... maybe painted around the 1750-1880's.

I may have got 2 seperate paintings mixed up but there are a lot of wounde men and they seem to look Mediteranean... or with darkish features.

Many thanks X

Click here. It's Goya's painting "The Third of May".

Ahhhhhhh dearest Quizmonster.... you're an absolute gem... thank you ever so much... but it proves that I WAS thinking about 2 different paintings!

Tha other was DEFINATELY a battle scene with a large flag flying on a pole that someone may have been carrying... I remember the scene being very busy like the Coronation Street advert where all the actors ares sitting very close together and the lighting is very dark, grey and powerful.... any ideas? X
Was it this one?
well I agree - the description is good for the 3rd of May

DO you think youcould rewrite the description to portray (ha!) what you're looking at, in such a way that people dont exclaim - Oh that must be Goya ?
Is it the corow ad which is the emmie ad, which is based on Rembrandt's guild pictures?
Thanks for your kind comment, Jeanette. I have a vague mental picture of the other painting you mention and had a hunt around Google, but couldn't come up with the specific one...or even the artist involved. I suspect it might be a Goya, too, however.
Your description reminds me of Delacroixs Liberty leading the People.
I had a look for the painting suggested by Homeresque above and found it here.
It's not the one I had in mind, but it may be yours, Jeanette.

Hi again, nope, it's not that one and I don't remember it being a battle of knights and armour, although I could be wrong.... aaaaaarrrrgggggghhhh! Its driving me NUTS!!!!!

It MAY be the Emmerdale advert... not sure as I don't really watch tv... if you see the advert, you'll know immediately what I'm talking about, but sadly, until then, I shall have to suffer..... ;C
