It's not racist, it's a mistake that'll be rectified I'm sure.

No-one with a basic knowledge of anatomy could believe that Marilyn Manson had a rib removed, the human body would simply collapse without the requisite number of ribs.
Interestingly, the story about Van Halen demanding a bowl of M and M's in their dressing room with all the brown ones removed is actually true.
It's nothing to with overpaid rock star pettiness, it has a sound reason -
Van Halen were one of the first bands to take stadium PA's to Asia, where wiring and earthing were not subject to the same rigours as at home, and a lax approach could lead to fatalities.
The band alaways wrote a complex and detailed contract ensuring that all safety measures were in place, and the final line demanded the M and M's with the brown ones removed.
On arrival, the band could see right away if their contract had been read correctly - and if not, they could start getting their crew to carry out safety checks before the show. If the brown M and M's were absent, then the contract had been read, and all would be fine.

It is a mistake, but since the image accompanied a feature about the treatment of black women, and lack of respect, the lady in question has a point when the publishers didn't even show sufficient respect to provide the correct image to accompany her point in print.

he had confused it with dayton ohio ( ten dead ) or columbine ....

.There was a book on Hong Kong in the 70s - hey did you realise that the dogs graffitti bit recently during the protests in HK were a play on 'No Dogs or Chinese" sings from the good old colonial days? Hong Kongers dont really look on themselves as mainland chinese

and was in fact a photie of the factories in Canton before they burnt down in 1855. bit snotty when I pointed it out

rib resection is commonly done - the ribs arent weight bearing so you can take them out without much loo-loo ( keep it simple Peter..)
The weight is born by the vertebrae - and you can take one (vertebra) out and it is ok so long as you stabilise the gap.
