My RAC membership is due for renewal. Has anyone got any recommendations of other companies that you have actually used recently?

Green Flag, superb.

Thanks. How long did you have to wait before they turned up?
Never had to call them out. But, their prices are competitive.
Stay away from the AA unless you don't mind being inundated with phone calls. All I did was ask for a quote and it felt like we were being stalked.
When my RAC cover was due for renewal, phoned them to say was going to switch to Green Flag he explained that I wasn't going to have a comparable service with them but as I said was going to try them, he reduced my premium to the same as last year. maybe worth a try!!

When I first moved away from home, I was living with flatmates and was dispatched off to the off licence to get more booze late one night (I was the only one who wasn't drinking). I broke down right by the train station and called the AA who I was with at the time. It would have been easy to find me due to my location. I waited 1 1/4 hours and eventually gave up and walked home. When I got home in the early hours I phoned them and they said they had come out but couldn't find me. The lying toerags - I`d never go with them again
I didn't actually take cover out with them. Made the mistake of putting my phone number in when getting a quote. They phoned me everyday for months!

I went with RAC but never had to call them out...luckily.

With Green Flag (Free, via Barclays Bank) only used them once when a Battery failed, they were there in 20 mins, Newmarket, Saturday afternoon, couple of years ago.
If didn't get them for free would pay to use them happily.

Thanks. It looks like Green Flag are about half the price of the RAC but it's only when you call someone out that you find out how good they are
I've always used Start Rescue for my cars/bikes - only called them a couple of times and they were very quick & efficient - especially so when my car was being used by lone female who had a nasty puncture on a motorway - excellent prioritised service for her.

Hard to comment on how competitive their prices are in general, as they seem to vary (as they should) with the age of your vehicle and your callout record - but I always seemed to get a good deal.

SD - were you in the middle of nowhere or urban when you called them out?
I was in the *** end of nowhere (Staffs Peak District) when I called them for help with my bike - 30 mins & they were there - about as quick as conceivably possible.

My friend was on the slip road of a major urban motorway in my Saab with a wrecked tyre - 25 mins from call to fixed & moving again.
23, top five breakdown cover on the right lower down. Mixed reviews for Green Flag. Start Rescue is five on that top five breakdown cover.

I see start rescue was the Which recommendation for 2016. I think I might go with them. Thanks everyone
Dependant on the make of car some manufacturers provide a discount cover. Mitsubishi is free for the first three years, then £29.99p a year from three to ten years. Don't know about any others.
With my Volvo I get full European breakdown cover simply by having it serviced by a Volvo dealer.
237sj, you break down alot??
bhg That's the sort of thing I was meaning - good value.

No Sharon. The last time I called them out my Dad was around and he has been dead for 10 years.
Thanks SD - I've just gone with Start and saved myself a load of money. Now I`m going to phone the RAC and tell them to cancel the renewal. I expect they will undercut their price but it'll be too late.
I'm with the RAC because I get a good deal through my insurance. However I've used these people in the past and I'm happy to recommend them:
