Among or amongst are the least of the linguistic problemettes in Auld Scotia. Here a cloak can add a certain something to a gentleman or used to tell the time.

I hope not, Sandy.....'tis a nicer word.....x

I'll keep using it then. I would have done anyway, I find the cloak of curmudgeonly old grump sits surprisingly comfortably on my shoulders.
Not really thought about but I always say amongst rather than among. But then I say gaol rather than jail !
As far as Chambers Dictionary is concerned:

among = amid/ of the number of "He was among friends"/ "Among our number is..."

amongst = of the number of : "Amongst our weaponry are such devices as fear, surprise, ruthless efficiency..."

So they are almost interchangeable, I think.
Amongst friends, it doesn't matter.
I have the same cloak, Sandy....black, size 12.....
I want to keep using.... balderdash and piffle.....x
I suppose amongst sits better with my dislike of closed lip lazy speech....x
the same

unless you are paying by letter

[dictionaries give usage and not correct grammar]

Ladies are luckier when it comes to cloaks. They can wear purple ones that don't match their red hats and spend their money on brandy.
A man would have to be a Prince of the Church to get away with a purple chasuble.
At least its not a Americanism.... If one more waitress says "enjoy ! " to me in this country, I am coming out shooting !
Depends on the context. If I was asking a question, I would say "Who among you.....?".
If one of my former Sgt Major's was telling us to give some instruction to the junior soldeirs he would say "Come on you NCO's, get amongst them......."
Soldiers even...........
But surely, Sandy..you can gobble up samples in shops and run your stick along public railings?
How are you ? I'm good, (every day speech now, I was not enquiring about your morals)

I tried to sample a bottle of wine in a local offie. Not a good idea. They call the police.
Phew!! Just as well, Ron....☻
You get to wear a purple chasuble around Easter

in case er anyone was wondering what the colours of the chsuble represented.
Popey and his lot were wearing lovely green ones a few weeks ago, as it was that time of the liturgical year.
Sandy, a few weeks ago I accidentally did that in Majestic.... :-(
What about this fairly recent habit on TV of films being announced as being released on "October 28" rather than "28th", or just "October 6" rather than "6th"? That really galls me.....

@mikey....is gaol pronounced in a different way from jail?
x x
coming out shooting

Sounds American to me.
