I don't know the nobleman or cleric in question but I'm pretty sure that heat is not a form of matter whereas it is energy and can transfer by radiation :)
Matter. This is because at the time it was generally believed that heat was a fluid called caloric that flowed from a hot body to a cold body.

Specifically it disproved caloric theory which stated that heat was some sort of fluid that flowed between bodies.

I presume that I'm too late for your homework which I synically expect is due in today.

But for anybody who's interested Rumford was a fascinating man - you know those small Victorian style fireplaces? They were his design.
