It isn`t allowed to happen which is why there`s a court case.

But it did happen, court case or no court case.

Most things you could ever imagine, good or bad, happen somewhere in the world at some time or other.
It is the measure of a civilised society that some of those things attract some sort of punishment, or punitive measures.
Britain does not allow slavery and this woman has had her crime detected and been prosecuted for carrying it out.

I can't see where it was 'allowed' to happen...
I think iit is perfectly possible for this kind of crime - and far far worse, to go on in modern Britain.

Increasingly, we live isolated self-contained lives, and people can live next door to people for years and never exchange pleasantries, much less any involvement in each others' lives.

i think the quesion is not - how was this allowed to happen, but how many times is it still happening as i type this?
it happened, but it wasn't "allowed" to happen. Same is true for any crime. It was detected and punished, which is as it should be. Obviously it would be nice if it never happened in the first place, but I'd say the same of murder, paedophilia, speeding and so on.
Note to self: Remember to feed the slave.
Odd question - who 'allowed' it?

If the case had come to court, was dismissed and the 'slavery' continued, then yes - you could ask how we could allow it to happen. But it HAS come to court - because laws were broken.

It's like asking how could we allow murders to happen. They just do - we don't allow it, but we have laws to punish the perpetrators when caught.
But it was only 'detected' by accident.
Because "God" condones keeping slaves!! he also condones beating them with a "rod" however if the slave dies from this beating within 3 days then he is in trouble.
It happens - people are lured to the UK on promise of jobs, the "employer" takes their passport off them, they are trapped. Either slavery or prostitution, or both. Often the victims feel too scared and resourceless to say anything, and who could they trust?

Don't be so pedantic JTH, you know quite well that that is a phrase often used.

Take a situation when some parent has harmed a child, even though that person had been tried and convicted of the crime, it is still said "How could this ever be allowed to happen".

Meaning of course where were the authorities at the time.
AOG

Where are the authorities???

Unless we have a system where every home in the country has it's own dedicated police force, plus a social worker living in the spare room, there will be children harmed by their parents, there will be domestic abuse, and there will be servant treated badly by their employers.
...........and as soon as it was discovered, it was ended and a prosecution resulted.

It doesn't matter how you twist, AOG, no such situation is *ever* allowed in this country !

Cant see the problem.

If a "slave" (wife, cleaner, woman that does) would work for you for 33UK pounds a month, wouldnt you taker her on?.............I would.

What is the point in paying someone 200UK pounds a month when they will do the job for 30UK pounds a month?
Shocking when it happens in UK but regrettably commonplace in many parts of the world. In some of the Gulf States migrant workers from Asia are forced to surrender their passports and cannot escape from slavery. UK, US and EU do nothing about it because we want oil and arms sales.
