Trouble with Internet Explorer

I'm having trouble getting my Google home page to stabilise; here is the sequence of events, repeated over and over many times until it somehow eventually resolves itself:

1. Google Home Page appears for a few seconds, then disappears.
2. Message appears : 'We are unable to return you to Google.co.uk.
3. Label appears: Internet Expolrer has encountered a problem and needs to close (with error report).

When I send the error report ( or decline) the entire sequence is repeated, over and over again, in a rhythical pattern, just like a gramophone needle sticking in a record.

Any idea what's wrong ?

Thanks.

What's wrong? You're using Internet Explorer, that's what's wrong! (Hardly any of the 'regulars' here in AB's Technology section would touch IE with the proverbial bargepole. Most people use Firefox or, occasionally, Chrome).

However, assuming that you still want to fix IE,it would help to know the following:
1. Which version of Internet Explorer are you using? (If you're not sure, and assuming that you can get IE to remain open for a few moments, click on Help > About Internet Explorer).
2. Which version of Windows are you using? (With which service packs, if appropriate?). If you're not sure, go to Start>Run. Type 'winver' and hit 'Enter'.
3. Is there a particular file mentioned to at the end of the message you're seeing (e.g. 'Pdm.dll).

Chris. It's IE version 8. Windows XP Version 5.1 with Service Pack 3. Not sure about the file at the end of the message because everything is working at the moment, but will probably start playing up when I open tomorrow.

Think I might go on to Firefox if things don't work out.

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply.

Without knowing if a specific dll file is mentioned in the error message, it could prove hard to pin down the cause of your problem (and, more importantly, the solution to it). However see if anything here helps:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/pc_ie_intro

Firefox is available here:
http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/
Many people would add the British English dictionary to it (for automatic spell-checking):
https://addons.mozill...S/firefox/addon/3366/
Using Adblock Plus with Firefox gets rid of all the annoying ads on AB (and elsewhere), resulting in pages loading much faster:
https://addons.mozill...S/firefox/addon/1865/
(I recommend choosing 'easyList' as your subscription service with Adblock Plus).

Chris
Chrome has a built-in spell checker. There is an ad blocker add-on available..

Thanks to you both.

I think I'll move to Firefox. I used to be on it but IE came with my new PC.

Thanks again and a Happy New Year.

Chris. Just to let you know that it's ' good-bye Internet Explorer' and ' Hello, Firefox.'

Firefox is working perfectly, with the add-ons you recommended.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the post, Derek ;-)
Try these browsers! These are far better than internet explorer! I used to have it then I made a move! Its the list of top browers!

1. Safari (Best browser voted)
2. Google Crome (Very Very Good fast and great)
3. Mozillia Firefox (Its ok goes down every now and then but its good because you can decorate it with themes and stuff)

Currently I have 3 browsers on my laptop
2 Which are able to delete
1 Cant delete comes on laptop

2 I have which are brilliant are Safari (Which is made by Itunes)
Google Crome

and internet explorer which I cant delete so! Hope im a help!

Incidentally, Collette, how do I ' decorate' firefox home page ?

The only thing I miss about Interbet Explorer is my Google home page on which I had local weather, clock, and other bits and bobs. Am I missing something ? Sorry to be a numpty !

D
Glad you sorted it out, Derek

I use only firefox or chrome now as IE is usually just soooooo slowwwwwwwwww! - it's infuriating at times.

Firefox with all the add ons is just great, as is chrome.
How to 'decorate' Firefox, Derek?

See here:
https://addons.mozill...en-US/firefox/themes/
or possibly here:

Chris
I've just heard an England player (James Anderson) stop midway through a sentence and correct himself. He was going to say how great it felt to 'win' the Ashes but he substituted 'retain' instead. Perhaps he's thinking like me?
Oops!

I don't know how that last post got there. I posted it in a completely different thread ;-)
Having followed this thread I have taken your advice and downloaded Adblock. You're right; gets rid of ads and pages load more quikly. Many thanks.
