Trouble with internet explorer

When closing down some web pages I sometimes get the message: 'Out of memory at line 56'

And when I close internet explorer I get the message:
DDE server window: iexplore.exe application error.
the instruction at 0x7e2a59cl referenced memory at 0x05e30b20 The memory could not be 'read'
click OK to terminate the program.

I am operating on Windows XP home edition and using Internet Explorer 6.

I have tried to update to Explorer 7 but nothing happens when I click the update button.

Please could anyone help me out?
