see link below. a spokesperson from wolverhampton council was interviewed on "midlands today", she said that the council had residents' best interests at heart. erm, no, they've got the council's financial interests at heart more like.

Playing devils advocate here, 2 million does seem a rather large sum of money for a local council to spend on keeping the facility running for only 9 residents (18 originally). If they left it alone how long before one of the relatives complained about sub standard conditions.

............... and the council's interests are the same as the council taxpayers of Wolverhampton.
I know - let's propose a referendum for the council taxpayers of Wolverhampton. Q1 - would you rather have £10 per year extra on your bill for the next umpteen years (until the last resident passes on, presumably) or is it better to find alternative accommodation now? Looks like a no-brainer to me. Do I see you putting your hand in your pocket, Cecil? As always, these situations are fine to pontificate about - until, of course, it impacts Me, Me, Me. Same as 'we all know the retirement age has to increase due to ageing population - as long as I'm not impacted. |

Wolverhampton has a population of around 250,000 with around half that figure paying council tax. To cover the cost of updating the site for these 9 people would cost each tax payer around £16.00 maybe more.
If your council (on top of any other necessary rises what with central government cutting back) upped your bill by £16.00 would you be happy? Would you be happy if they told you it was for a special needs group consisting of 9 people but didn't happen to mention the people in question were a little old lady of 106 and her friends. |

no I probably would'nt be happy about it, but would consider it necessary, I think some clever person should be able to come up with the money for a few years, and put a date of definate closing on it so everyone at the home knew it was going to happen, not just announce it shortly before it happened, the unexpected is also something the very elderly are fearful of.
I wish I had the sort of money that some folks had, it would be nice to be able to put wealth to good use instead of buying yet another expensive car or yacht. |
