Please can we have a section for Questions in Text Speak only that have to be answered in Text Speak and can Text Speak be outlawed everywhere else on the site.

This is not meant to be a serious suggestion, but I am sure I am not the only one who can't stand it and it seems that more and more young folks are using it instead of English.  It is fine for Mobile's but please not anywhere else - it's just so lazy!

Well stated Fakeplastic, I too cant stand text, it takes me a lot longer to read and understand than if it was written in full, Long live the English Language!!!!!

That's just it Dinsdale - it actually takes longer to read  and probably longer to write!
I'm with you on this one, FP. I particularly detest 'LOL', since the one thing you can state categorically every time you see it is that the person who wrote it is simply lying! They're not 'laughing out loud'...they might have smiled briefly at the supposedly comic masterpiece they are commenting on, but that's about all.
i havent got a clue what it means, and i dont use it on my mobile either.i have just come back from london and the young people actually talk it!! in the street.this is an english speaking site, not planet text.cul8r.
Well done Fakeplastic. The A/bank campaign for correct English. And another thing I hate is colons, brackets etc after a sentence which we are supposed to be able to decipher as some sort of emotion.

What like this Archbishop  :o(
I have a lot of sympathy with what you have all said, but I'm not sure where I stand on this in the context of the AB. I would hate to dissuade people (particularly youngsters) from posting questions just because of their new-found vernacular. In other places I am a champion of 'correct' and accurate use of English, but I have a 'take everything at face value' attitude when visiting AB. However, if a 5 word question that says or means little is posted, I do have the option of ignoring it. But I understand what you mean. Or do I "hear what you say'? NGB.
I agree it it takes to long to read.

I too find it difficult to follow text speak and even purchased a dictionary to help me understand it, with little success so far.

LOL is one of the only ones I feel confident enough with to use. I think that the use of LOL or smileys {:-) can change the way a message is read. With the addition of either it can be seen that a post is meant purely tongue in cheek and can save misinterpretations. Maybe I find these acceptable because I know what they mean?

The trouble is it has become a new means of communicating and although we may find it more difficult to follow the people that use it may find it quicker and easier. It's a shame that the profanity filter can't identify them and put in the correct words instead.

Yes Fp (that's not text speak is it?) I mentioned this a while ago when there was a posting about bad spelling & punctuation, text speak is much more annoying.

I don't even use it on my mobile & neither do my sons - they're so quick, they can send a perfectly written message in seconds!

I do have to agree with  Wraith though about lol & smileys & confess to using them.

Just to add that I don't use it on my mobile either and neither does my son.  I don't think my husband knows how to send a text message on his!

Just an example:  See the 30th answer on this thread:

It took me ages to work it out and I bet it took longer to write than if it were in English!!

Hi Fakeplastic (and AB ed.) I am right behind you on this one. Text speak, childish, pathetic repeated questions and complete ignorance of grammar, spelling and punctuation have made a once entertaining and informative site into the mostly irritating place it is today. I am glad to see that unlike me there are regulars on here who have risen above the ignorance and stayed the course.  I have not been on here for months and although it seems slightly better now it still leaves a lot to be desired.

Rant over

Man, is this the most fogey-ish thread in the history of the Answer Bank?!  The retired sergeant-majoir sending letters to the Mail about all these dratted youngsters and their habits would feel right at home.  And more worryingly, I agree with every word.  Dwn wit txt spk!
fck off cnts
Question Author
Yes, I'm an old fogey, I admit it.  There should be a TV programme called 'Grumpy Old Ladies' then I could join in.  I'm giving you three stars.  I don't usually rate because everybody is entitled to their own opinions, but I'm giving you three stars for making me smile.
Then Fakeplastic I'm a Grumpy Old Lady too.. perhaps we could be the two on the balcony?
Thank goodness, FP, that you didn't say 'LOL' in response to the reply from Lookslikemilk that amused you!!
Question Author
I wouldn't have dared after what you have said.  I promise QM that I will never use it again.  I have been known to!
