Angel of the south

What do people think of the shortlisted designs? Personally I like the horse but think all the others look bl00dy awful.

I like the dish with the wing Design by Christopher le Brun. The site doesn't look very good though. Bl00dy great pylon to distract from the sculpture, behind it.

The horse and the wing designs are OK but not too keen on the others. How did that tangled mess make the shortlist? I wonder how much the designer was paid to come up with this monstrosity?

Raggy, It's not as bad as 'concrete bunker on top of a slagheap' by Rachel Whiteread. Fair enough in a Turner prize exhibition love, but not where people are going to be forced to see it eh?

I find the dish with the wing the best, but I can't say I really like any of them - and all that tangled wire is just dreadful!

I quite agree. This modern art is just rubbish. Why don't they just get normal people to judge instead of these weirdos who produce the stuff? Also the Angel of the North is just rubbish and is rusting like hell. Why didn't they make it out of stainless steel?

What said it all to me was when the cleaners removed a bag of rubbish from an exhibition not knowing it was a supposed work of art.

I like the first, second & fourth. Not wild on the horse and really don't like the tangled mess.

Actually, I find the horse quite sinister! And I'm not quite sure what it represents. It's just like a giant horse ornament and I can't stand horse ornaments.

This was suggested at Southampton and Ithink it would be a rather nice complement to the Angel of the North

I've got nothing against modern art sp1214, and I really like the angel of the north. I just think these designs are dire. I reckon the local primary schools could have come up with better stuff than this.

Is this the best that british designers can come up with. I despair!

The only thing the South is good for is warm flat horrible beer.

With that in mind, here is my design for Angel of the South

Gromit - I'm proposing a 200 metre hand flicking the V's situated somewhere in the midlands and pointing North ;-)

Will it go really rusty in 10 seconds flat like 'The Angel of the North' ?

Designers eh? Artists today!

They should listen to the views of the public. Then we'd have something nice as Angel of the South like a giant poster of a woman in a bikini on a motorbike. Or a huge black and white one of a male model cradling a baby.

A white horse is a symbol of Kent, it appears on the badge of their county cricket team. I'll leave you to look up why.

Quinlad, I'm surprised at that display of intellectual snobbery. I could have sworn I saw you on another thread reprimanding people for sneering at tasteless chavs. It's obviously ok for you to do it though.
You didn't answer the question either. What do you think of the designs? Which is your favourite?

Actually, ludwig. I'm sneering at sneerers. And their unsolicited attempts to loudly foist their taste on others and dismiss what doesn't fall into line with their own views.

Chav-bashing and modern art-tutting fall into that category.

Perhaps I was too tongue-in-cheek about it.

(I prefer the wing design.)

Quinlad. Sneering at sneerers. That's alright then.
I interpreted it as an elitist art snob comment. A dismissal of anyone who fails to appreciate the artistic merit of say Tracey Emin's bed as some kind of ignorant prole whose tastes aren't sufficiently refined enough to be allowed to express an opinion.

I think the wing design looks like a sports trophy you'd find in a shoe repair/key cutting shop, but 50 metres tall. That's just my opinion of course, it's no more or less valid than yours.
