I Hope This Police Officer Is Facing Serious Jail Time!!
This is absolutely disgusting! I have been in exactly this position myself, I just casually took the knife away on both occasions. At 95, even if this lady tried to stab an officer, I doubt she would have the strength to penetrate his clothing, her actions would have been so slow, so easily avoidable. Im amazed the care home didn't just deal with this themselves!!

i was smacked round the face and sexually assaulted by a patient with dementia, a little old man who looked like butter wouldn't melt, with arms the size of a sparrow's legs.
You may have disarmed 2 would-be stabbers before but i would suggest as you weren't there this time, you are not in a position to comment about the strength and ferocity of the woman

Bednobs, I'm sorry you experienced that, this type of behavior is sometimes experienced when dealing with dementia, unfortunately. But a 95-year-old lady with a walking frame!! not exactly a Ninja warrior!! I have worked in dementia units for 20 years, I'm sorry but there isn't a 95-year-old lady on this planet that has to be tazed to disarm her, it's ridiculous!! I would be more afraid of a 5-year-old with a knife to be honest, maybe this cop would use the same method!

Certainly basic defensive moves were always part of police training using hand only. Instruction on how and how not to use a truncheon and when. Later on in my career you could specialise and complete the Bodyguard Course which involved more persuasive and discreet tactics involving unarmed and armed. That was for protection duties.
I can't speak for the staff as I was not there, , but I would of thought some burly nurse could of walked up behind her and thrown a blanket over her and disorientated her whilst they grabbed the knife. It may of scared her but probably not life threatening. There would of been no need for police involvement either. It can't be the first time this hospital has to deal with a patient armed with a weapon and suffering dementia. It happens in the UK frequently if the staff take their eyes off them for 2 minutes.

Scottish police seem not to be able to disarm an 11-year-old with learning difficulties, holding nothing more than a butter knife, without using a taser on him:
