I went to Rhyl a few years ago and thought it was pretty grim. Does that count as north?
I don't go up north very often, being a SW girl.
Hull must have something for it to be made the 2017 City of Culture.
Great Yarmouth. Horrible place full of decrepit old seaside attractions, hideous people, drunks, and horrible tatty shops. Also an alarmingly high number of shops which sell weaponry on the high street. It's essentially a giant retirement home for those really gross, unfunny, miserable comedians and lowbrow "entertainers" of days gone by - Jim Davidson, Roy Chubby Brown, Derek Acorah, and the like.

There was once a reason to go there - the waxworks was surreal due to how utterly unlike their subjects they looked, and was actually quite an entertaining place. But it closed. There is now nothing whatsoever to recommend the place.
My worst town in north of UK would be Glasgow. Awful place even greeted by drunken abusive paraffins as you step off the train.

If we are including the South I would say London has definitely become the pits. Not all of it but much of it now.

If Hull is the armpit of the UK, Accrington, Lancashire is the boil on the backside of the UK, Glasgow is the cancerous growth of the UK and finally, Sunderland is the UK's urinal.
stoke on trent
Oi!
Oi from me too
Parts of Stoke may be run down down but I find teh peopel there are particlarly friendly. Walk in any pub and i could get chatting to someone and would be called "duck" immediately
I dnt think I have ever been to a place and wanted to move on immediately

[but then I did sleep on a concrete floor in Cairo for six months so I obviously put up with quite a lot]

erm - blackpool in winter ?
I went to Blackpool in winter. Jeez...it's harsh!
Glasgow and Newcastle for me!!
I would move back to Stoke like a shot, if I could. Not to Stoke itself but the periphery.
I spent an hour or so in Glasgow. Really scared me. But I'm a wuss.
Last time I went there a lovely old lady sold me some Italian fruit cake, Genoa?
Oops wrong thread :)
Swindon I think was deliberately designed to upset anyone who ever visited it.
I would like to suggest Brinington, near Stockport, Cheshire. It's so bad the three pubs that were there closed because of violence. Second on my list would be the Romford area. Stayed in Chadwell Heath for a few months and it was truly ghastly.
When I was young I took an apple tart to Leeds, Liverpool and Reading, all because my maths teacher said take pie to three dismal places.
