Apparently it is a controversial theory in Turkey so has been taken out of the curriculum.

The Bible is just of a mish-mash of assorted mythological stories, all cobbled together by people 2000 years ago.
Man has been around in one form or another for about three million years!
and HE has still not learned how to put doon the loo lid ! lol
Indeed Boaty.

Louis Leaky first suggested, in the last century, that man originated in the Rift Valley.

But there is no evidence whatsoever that it originated in the Middle East, about 6000 years ago, and for modern, educated people to believe it did, shows a complete lack of intellect.

The difficulty is, of course, that the Biblical version of how life started is such a lynch pin of religion, that its removal would mean the total collapse of those religions.

Its a fascinating subject !
That's because he's evolved to know it should be up & away when he's finished using it.
Unlikely to be a total collapse, merely an admission that their hypothesis regarding how God started everything was a bit out.
Minty....back in the 60's, with 3 sons to care for, my mother solved that problem by swapping the outside toilet for an urinal, which 2, and even 3 young boys could use at the same time !

Sorted !
In response to Quangoid, if by proof you want thousands of skeletons showing next to no noticable difference between pairs, yet a transition from apelike to humanlike as one goes down the line, well clearly that's not a reasonable expectation. Fossils are lucky finds and there are bound to be places someone determined to disbelieve can point to. But Google https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=is+there+still+a+missing+link&oq=is+there+still+a+miss&aqs=chrome.0.0j69i57j0l2.9751j0j4&client=tablet-android-google&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#xxri=3 to see loads of persuasive evidence that there is an LCA. And as science develops, more gets added.
The "missing link" argument is bogus. Not least because as soon as you find one, someone then points out that now you need *two* missing links.
Good old plain common sense would tell people that the creation myth of the Bible, and other similar religions cannot possibly be true. I repeat....that if people really do believe that man was created about 6000 years ago, it just shows the depth of their intellect.
Didn't know the Great Rift Valley was in the Middle East. Thought it was in south/central Africa.
Scooping...it is in Africa, and a long way from the Middle East.

Perhaps I am misinterpreting your post ?
The ‘Young Earth’ theory is absolute tosh. There is ample evidence that man existed long before that.

Mikey, //the Biblical version of how life started is such a lynch pin of religion//

That’s not entirely accurate. The biblical version of the creation of man is not the version taught – but to recognise that it’s necessary lay aside those teachings and read the biblical version without pre-conceived notions.

//The Bible is just of a mish-mash of assorted mythological stories, all cobbled together by people 2000 years ago.//

The Old Testament was written rather more than 2000 years ago, but that aside, personally, I believe the bible contains a lot of history and a lot of truth – largely, for reasons of expediency, and often because the content doesn’t align with the preferred view - ignored.

Jim, I don’t think the missing link argument is bogus.
Mikey4444: No worries.
It's certainly used in a bogus way, Naomi, because as I say people tend to just shift the goalposts and require two missing links every time you find the one they originally asked for.

Obviously it's ideal to find as much evidence as possible to support evolution but the fossil record is never going to provide everything you require because, by definition, it simply can't.

10,000's of gullible, credulous Americans visit this place every year, and believe every word !

As regards Noah's Ark, this might be an ideal opportunity
to post this Mrs Brown clip, just one more time !

Does any religion preach the notion that God created prehistoric man who then evolved?
Vulcan....none that I know of !
Vulcan, certainly no mainstream religion.

Mikey, Creationism is not the sole preserve of Americans.

Jim, //people tend to just shift the goalposts and require two missing links every time you find the one they originally asked for. //

If the answer to the question had been provided, there would be no further questions.
The issue of humans evolving from apes and there being a missing link is irrelevant in terms of proving evolution.

The fossil record clearly shows that there were only very simple organisms many, many millions of years ago – and as time went by, more and more complex life forms appear in the fossil record.

See this Wikipedia link for more info.

The most interesting to me is the ‘Life timeline’ diagram about half way down – showing the earth to be around 4.5 billion years old – with Land life first appearing around 400 million years ago.
