ladybirder - //Never to old to learn and I just don't get why some people resent it.//

I have absolutely no problem with anyone knowing more about absolutely anything than I do, and being willing to educate me.

What I find depressing is the need for some people to adopt an attitude that those who have not shared their experience are lesser individuals for it - and that is what can, and does happen on here from some with military experience.

I think they should accept that, with the exception of those conscripted. they have those experiences because they signed up for them as part of their role in the military.

To be willing to share military experience with those who have none is fine, to come on here with a chip on the shoulder and a "You have no idea because you've never done it, and I have, I am better than you ... " is not helpful.

That is the only point I am making.

I understand the main crux of your point Andy, maybe questioners should add riders that they only want replies from those qualified in the particular field in the question.
andy-hughes, Perhaps your attitude is at fault. I’ve not done military service, but when talking to those here who have I’ve never felt as you do.

//It would be appreciated, certainly by me, if those with military experience could dial down the scorn and vilification visited on those of us who have not had military experience//

I for one have never done any of those things, just stated facts, I think it is as Naomi says down to attitude.
as I keep saying..until you walk a mile in those shoes ...!
They wear boots, minty.
It is attitude. andy-hughes has similar problems with other people talking about other subjects.
// if those with military experience could dial down the scorn and vilification visited on those of us who have not had military experience// Baldric

so only those who had bombed Hamburg/dresden could say if it were a war crime or not -

only those who had gassed little children could say if it were right or wrong
- sorry scrub that - only those who had hunted foxes in hunting pink could say it is were good bad or criminal

only those who had acted in self defence ( = knocked the crap out of someone and got away wiv it) could say if such and such a case were truly self defence

only those who had yomped in the Falklands could say if yomping were hard work or not - from the viddies it looked damned hard work

only those who had been to sink schools such as the one up the road and failed their exams could give an opinion on whether english skools were crap or not

I mean such an argument is rubbish isnt it ?
PeterPedant, //I mean such an argument is rubbish isnt it ? //

Your argument is. You've missed the point completely.

Baldric didn't make that statement, he was quoting andy-hughes.

That's not what I am saying.

My point is not that anyone who has experience should not be free to share it, I am all for that, what I am not so keen on is the attitude that because the majority of readers do not share the experience, that they are somehow diminished by that, and the inference is that they are somehow lesser people for not knowing directly what is being discussed.

Let me offer a less contentious example - if a woman wants to come on here and explain what childbirth is like, then I am as interested as anyone else to read what she has to say. But if the underlying message is - of course, you don't understand because you can't do what I do, and that makes you inferior to me, then that is something I am not willing to accept without comment.
Naomi - //andy-hughes has similar problems with other people talking about other subjects. //

Since you are willing to bring this up, I am happy to call you out on it - again.

If you want to tell me something about Islam, based on the fact that you may know something more about than I do, then that is absolutely fine.

But if you want to tell me - rough quote "You don't understand it, and I don't think you ever will ..." then that is not fine because that is patronising me by making the assumption that I am too stupid to grasp something that you understand, and therefore I am a lesser person than you, and I am not going to let that pass without challenge.
Andy I understood the point you were making but when I read the posts you are talking about I just don't interpret them as you do at all. I don't see chips on shoulders or scoffing or scorn and so on. More someone passionate and proud of serving their country and I get that. I can't understand why you keep taking offence where I don't think any offence was meant.
The blue pencil has been working overtime.
So you keep telling us.

Andy , I certainly didn't mean to imply that the whole of my reply described what you were saying.

I obviously worded it badly.
so many removed answers, sigh
