Basing your party's way forward based on a 'total war' is likely to end in tears for any party trying it. It is effectvely trying to end democracy by saying if you dont do what we say all hell, including violence, will rain down on you.

I think most Americans will see through it, the Democrats need to do more than attract a load of liberal elites & luvvies with wads of cash to win through. They also need good solid policies that will win the mainstream.

I wouldn't be so optimistic that Americans are going to "see through it" -- the Republicans were basically up to the same tricks for most of Obama's second term (and probably a fair amount of the first, if it comes to that), and we ended up with a Republican-nominated president.

I'm sure if you go looking ymb you'll find examples of people burning or hanging Obama effigies, protests on the streets, etc etc -- but mainly I was referring to the political stranglehold that the Republicans had in place from around 2010.

Extremists from either side are as bad as the other, although we tend to focus on the despicable actions of those we anyway don't agree with for sure.

Trump might arguably have a non toxic record in politics as he's not had long enough to poison the water yet, although the idea that he has contributed zero to the poisonous atmosphere thus far seems somewhat fanciful.
As I've said before, if he's 'draining the swamp' it's surely only to make room for one of his own
