"Jack...well said at 18:29 ! BA for Jack ! "

I was just about to post the same thing, Mikey

More chance of me getting best answer on University Challenge I suspect ...
Are you less depressed now you know it isn't happening, are you local?

Perhaps you could campaign for a better use for the building.
I am full of the 'milk of human kindness' when it comes to homeless kids on our streets and ex servicemen who get handed a raw deal after fighting for their county. THEY should have priority over refugees and migrants imo.
^Now there's a 'Best Answer'!
BA to Baldric at 17:06 !
Ta naomi !
You're welcome.
Let's just recap on one of the nominations:

"The clue is in the name, The Church of England, what the hell are they doing collecting lorry-loads of clothes and gifts for Economic Migrants in Calais.
That is what they are, they ceased to be Refugees when they failed to claim asylum in the first safe Country they reached and carried on to Calais, empowered by the stupid Schengen Agreement in their attempt to reach the UK and live off the back of the UK Taxpayer. "

Not sure the answer relates to the story at the link, but hey, it definitely deservesd a prize for ... something :-)
Awe-inspiring.

Housing homeless children or Ex Service Personnel would be a perfect use for the building now this particular plan has been rejected.
The failure to help our own 'people in need' is, indeed, a shameful state of affairs....but it can be assuaged, in part, if other human beings are helped where they can be.
As I said ich, it deserves best answer !

There are a huge number of Charities in all areas for almost every conceivable group - if the help is not reaching these people, yes it's a tragedy too.
Isn't this a disgrace, a Christian organization helping refugees, tut tut .
" The local council are obliged to make sure those most affected are given that chance."
But they aren't obliged to take any notice. We have the prospect of urban sprawl just down the road from where I live, with the subsequent loss of countryside. Don't know anyone here that wants it but the leaflets pushed through the door indicate that we can discuss what we want but it is still going ahead (obviously because we and our views, aren't important).
//whydidnt they claim asylum in the first country they came across ? //

alot did Ni a lot did

" As of November 2015, UNHCR reported that there are 4,289,994 Syrian "persons of concern" of whom 630,776 are registered as refugees in Jordan. There are about 1.4 million Syrian refugees in Jordan, only 20 percent are living in the Za'atari, Marjeeb al-Fahood, Cyber City and Al-Azraq refugee camps." in fact millions of them did ..... 250 or whatever it is is peanuts compared

it is around 20% of the population of JOrdan
// That is what they are, they ceased to be Refugees when they failed to claim asylum in the first safe Country //

oh I see - none of the kindertransport were refugees let along Jewish refugees because in 1939 they came here instead of a safe country like er Poland or France . Bit like Anne Frank - her Dad otto was a german national ....

amazing what you learn on AB

[3T I need you to ask pithily - ' "kind of what sport ?" wot dat den?']

I don't claim to be an expert PP but it is my belief that the convention that put together rules on refugees was put together by the UN in 1951, which would have been too late to define refugees in 1939 at which time it would have been more of a free-for-all (I suspect since such mass fleeing would not have been expected before the world wars).
