there seems to be a lot more room for expansion round places like Stansted (thogh my sister, who lives there, would disagree) and Luton. Are other countries expanding airports that are already in the middle of conurbations?
Heathrow's big enough. There must be scope for other, further north, airports to be developed.

Passengers don`t want to travel miles to connecting airports. They want to fly into LHR and fly out again very quickly.
I'm not thinking of conencting airports, I'm thinking of replacing LHR altogether with a bigger and better organised one that is (sort of) future proof, like Hong Kong. I quite liked the Boris Island idea on those grounds.

That is not going to happen
I know. The British have mostly lost the taste for long-term infrastructure planning. Still the best idea, though (I'm assuming radically improved connections to the city.)

I think the fact that we are going to get a third runway is due to the British are looking at long term planning
they're claiming they need it imminently, aren't they? That's short-term - maybe medium-term at best.
What's with developing Birmingham? There are fast communications with London and the more important parts of the UK.

Because people don`t want to connect through Birmingham
Well, perhaps they should be encouraged to! Don't get me wrong, I used to drive through the road nightmare to the NEC several times a year and I dislike the place intensely. But if HS2 is to be of any use whatsoever then it will provide a fast link to London. Believe it or not there are also plenty of other desirable business destinations such as Manchester, Leeds or even Birmingham.

PS No-one up North who I have spoken to wants HS2. We'd all much rather that our basic infrastructure was repaired and expanded. The A64 desperately needs to turn into a dual carriageway throughout its length for a starter. It grinds to a halt and is the major transport artery E/W.
if they're just connecting, does it matter where they do it? If you're giong from NY to Dubai and you don't actually want to get off in London, is there any special reason to use Heathrow?

Jourdain, I assume the purpose of HS2 is to get Londoners to consider moving their businesses north, rather than get northernish folk down to London. A bit of decentralisation would move some of the spotlight away from London, and no bad thing. But I appreciaate many would prefer an HS3 linking up cities in the middle of England.

I have worked in aviation for 31 years. I think LHR will get the third runway. Maybe I will be wrong...
Suggestions I've heard on the news is that if they do they may be held up in the courts for years.

Any highly populated area is a poor choice for an airport. Folk have a right to decent living conditions and continually expanding one making things deteriorate over time, is bound to be an issue.

They need to find a new location with good links all over the country. Folk seem to be too Londoncentric anyway. A hub can be anywhere. Holidaymakers don't want to trek all the way to London anyway. There is capacity already for businessfolk who need to be in London in person and for whom electronic communication is not an acceptable alternative.
Like you SJ I have been working in Aviation a long time - 36 years. I worked in Queens Building at Heathrow some years ago. Now working Just north of it.

don't give ryanair ideas......

grasscarp - ah, Queens Building. I remember that (and the customs guys in there)
SJ, our office looked across into the customs offices. They regularly watched a certain type of film - presumably seized, or maybe to see how bad it was. Sometimes the lady customs officers watched the same type of X rated film. Only difference was that they watched in fast forward!!!!

They confiscated some booze of me once. I took the lid off it so that they couldn`t use it for their christmas party. There used to be a ginger bearded man in there who was the most miserable git - remember him? I`m sure they put in in Queens Building so that he didn`t scare off the tourists.
