jack - //Why would these Muslim police officers in their attire cause any additional resentment on Scottish streets than that caused by the presence of more 'traditionally' attired police officers? //

Because 'our' streets should be policed by 'our' police, and no pandering to the ethnics.

Do try to keep up!!!

I am sure some Scots will resent the mere sight of the uniform.
I find it very offensive that we have to bend our rules and culture to accommodate those that will not budge an inch to change theirs when in our country.

If they really dont like it, there are plenty of countries that have laws and rules which will suite them so why not go there?
Ah.....and I am sure that some Scots will resent the mere sight of *any* police uniform in their locale...
Hard act to follow are Taggart and Rebus!

It's 'moider'!!

Sums it up nicely imo. Give and take should mean a lot more than us doing all the giving and them doing all the taking.

I really don't think that choosing to dress in a way that makes people feel comfortable is a reason for such ire and offence - but if you do, then we can agree to differ.

Personally, I find far more offensive modes of dress among the indigenous population - especially when the sun comes out!!!

One trusts that it is not a numbers game and that they were the best recruits for the job...
I'm not convinced they dress differently to be comfortable.

I also think it may well cause issues with parts of our indigenous society particularity the drunks and some mentally ill.

I wonder, do those headscarf's have a hard bit in the top for when a yob hits them over the head with a bit of wood?

And if attacked, will it always be classed as 'racial' ?
youngmagbog, does a WPC's normal felt style hat have wood in it?
YMB - //I'm not convinced they dress differently to be comfortable. //

Why not?
^ YMB probably knows but he's keeping it under his hat I reckon.

Who said it did, I must have missed that?
This is truly stunning:

I also think it may well cause issues with parts of our indigenous society particularity the drunks and some mentally ill.

Just...amazing.

Are we now saying that a officer's uniform should be predicated on the reaction it will get from drunks and the mentally ill?

If we are, we have truly gone through the looking glass.

And someone earlier 'it has been said that the easiest way to destroy any organisation is from the inside'.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I rather admire these women. Policing is a difficult and dangerous occupation, but it's great to see Muslim women joining the force...

...especially as the experts on Islam on AB have been telling us for years that Muslim women are hard done by, put upon and second class citizens.

Through all that, they have the balls to become police offices, rather than keyboard heroes.

I hadn't realised Police Scotland were so far behind the rest of the UK in this, ta for the update.
Sp - how did you get through all the tear gas to write that!

I'm not so sure it is 'great' to see Muslim women. There should be no differentiation as to the make up of the force.

Those selected to protect us should be the finest, well trained, motivated and skilled people.
And here's something that I don't understand...

Why should the rules we follow be solely in favour of white people? Whether you like it or not, Britain has been a multicultural country for sixty years. Therefore, it totally makes sense that rules and considerations which made sense in 1956 be altered and discarded in 2016.

When some commentators talk about 'fitting in', they're talking about fitting in to a society that doesn't exist any more. They're talking about the 50s.

This is now.

That was then.

I think it's great because it demonstrates a willingness to be part of our society. I want to see Muslim women do whatever they want, be that in the medical professions (and I'm sure that we can all agree - there is a fine representation there), legal professions, architecture, catering, or as mothers and homemakers.

I think it's great to see these women in visible professions, and making careers for themselves.

I especially have admiration for them entering the police, because as I've said before, it's a pretty dangerous and difficult job. I doubt I would have the balls to be a copper. I admire anyone (male, female) who joins the force.
That should read:

altered or discarded
