As always, pointless acts of violence create a debate in which people try to reason why the perpetrators have behaved as they have. And thereby hangs the problem. You cannot attribute rational thought processes to people who behave in this way. Questions like "What were they thinking?" in terms of consequences

Look...I'm not saying they shouldn't be held 100% accountable. I just think sometimes youths don't actually think about the consequences of their actions. Their punishment hopefully will make them think before they act in future.

it is going on a long time - I recall waiting for a taxi when I was in my twenties and a glass bottle was thrown out of a car - bottle smashed and one of the pieces struck my right leg causing it to bleed.
Even then I didn't go to A&E - went home and bathed it and wrapped it in a bandage.
BUT I do not condone those lads - the lady in question is old and frail and of course the shock could do more damage.

This was a heck of a lot more than just a harmless prank that went wrong.
If two 17 and three 15 year olds are so ignorant of the potential consequences of throwing a brick at someone's head then they should be given several years extra education in an approved school. The publicity may warn others of the consequences of doing the same.

Retro...my uncle, now 65, was caught joyriding in his youth. He's one of the nicest people. His punishment....he was made to join the army!
He's not a thug, or a criminal, he did something stupid, and he paid the price.
We shouldn't write our kids off because of an act of stupidity.
I would have been slightly blase about these sorts of crimes until I became a driver. It's then you realise the seriousness of it.

There is something very wrong if anyone can justify this completely unforgiveable and mindless act of violence. I don't care what excuses are mooted - these idiots need to be punished in accordance with the full force of the law. No-one can not be aware of the damage that a brick thrown through a window con do. They are all old enough to be aware of social responsibilty and if they choose to ignore it then they deserve everything they get.
