They will probably get off with a warning or a few hours community work, but the courts have got to start getting tough!!!!!

As always, pointless acts of violence create a debate in which people try to reason why the perpetrators have behaved as they have. And thereby hangs the problem. You cannot attribute rational thought processes to people who behave in this way. Questions like "What were they thinking?" in terms of consequences, for the victims and potentially themselves...

Really? What is wrong with whose youth?

I can't believe what I've must seen. Those poor people in that taxi and the driver.
What a disgraceful thing for anyone to do , what a shock for them.
I've just witnessed the most inane thread on AB, watching the live pictures from France, and now this deplorable attack on innocent people. What a sad world we live in . :-(
And some hate filled posts on this site.
But Anne, the World has always had its share of horror, hate and brutality - now it unfolds live before our eyes as it happens.

If these 5 youths are found to be culpable of what could of been a manslaughter charge and might well still be if she died in the near future then we have to consider they may spawn much more pond life as themselves with the same genes if allowed to.
'What is wrong with these youths today?" Nothing that 10' feet of sisal wouldn't put right when they reach 18yrs. They are old enough to know right and wrong and take responsibility for their actions.
Mine is no post of hatred. I have no hatred for a dear elderly couple who have just enjoyed a night out together and suffer this brutality.
Why should I have pity and love the perpetrators. A rope round their necks is not hatred or revenge. It is a judicial system of making an example of those out there who would like to try their hand at something similar. That will be the way to stamp this mindless thug cult out.
A man died on his way to work during the miner's strike. Large brick thrown off a bridge on to a taxi. If the killers had been hung for their crime then that might just jog the memory of those who try to emulate this cowardly senseless deed.
Despite the awfulness of fracturing a pensioner's skull with a thrown brick, I don't think that, even in the days when we were barbaric enough to have a death penalty, it was applied for GBH or whatever the assault charge is.

There have always been individuals willing to do such things. It becomes news because it isn't normal practice. And I doubt any more common now than it has been in the past. We need to keep a sense of proportion.
Not even youths. Thst Pictorius only git 6 years in jail. Seems the justice system is the problem.
By responding to brutality with compassion and understanding given to the perpetrators, you signal acceptance of their thuggish behaviour. The response of physical chastisement I.e. The birch, with custodial confinement to follow would Send out a more persuasive message.
"released on bail" ....first mistake

If you read my post carefully You would of seen I mentioned manslaughter.
The shock alone could easily kill a frail elderly person some time after the attack. What was it. A year and a day I believe was the time a person lived before a murder charge was brought.
I didn't mention GBH but it could certainly become more serious.God pray the lady survives the shock of this horrendous act.
One could be forgiven for thinking you are implying 'boys will be boys'.

Oh i don't know, baz. Perhaps it gives the woman's relatives an opportunity to find out who they are and, er, have a word with them.
It's hard to predict what their motives were but at a guess I'd say it was an act of stupidity.

It's not the youths of today though. I remember similar things happening when I was a kid.

They don't think of the damage they can do.
I had already noted that, but the concern was still the tying of a brick throwing incident to an opportunity to call for the capital punishment (even though qualified by an 'it might have been worse' consideration). I'm unsure the death penalty was ever applicable for manslaughter either.

Personally I'd not think anyone needed to be forgiven for inferring that I was saying, "boys will be boys", but I'd doubt the ability to understand written English in those who do.
I think its more than an act of stupidly. If they choose to pickup an object aim it at a passing taxi, surely the intention is to break the glass k nowing at least one person is in the vehicle and the possibility of injuring someone ?
"I'd say it was an act of stupidity. "

and thats all it was, just an act of stupidity ?

"Well m'lud, they were just being stupid, so no reason for a proper sentence, after all weve all done stupid things before, so a word of warning should suffice"

Ive done stupid things , but ive never ever ever thought of obtaining and then hurling a frikkin brick through a taxi or any other window for that matter.

and all you can come up with is stupid..beyond belief..with an attitude like that it starts to explain why we have scum like that roaming the streets
It was an act of utter stupidity - but the utterly stupid must be made to take full responsibility for their actions. No excuses.
It's all society's fault. We really must raise the age of criminal responsibility to 30.
These poor little misguided lambs are nearly old enough to vote and get married. Well the two 17 year olds are. None of my 17 year old associates and friends would think of such a cowardly irresponsible crime at that age.
