"But - in an early indication of what kind of support Britain can expect as it negotiates its exit - one of Chancellor Angela Merkel's senior MPs told me that there would be consequences for Britain. Peter Beyer said that it was important to discourage other member states from heading for the door. " - What consequences? do tell!

They can't impose unfavourable terms. We have a right to go, and if other countries insist on spoiling relationships and being awkward we can just go and let them whistle. Not that we would want to do so for a second. Anyone needs to retain what goodwill one has, and leave of good terms in order to make future relationships and trading as beneficial to all as possible. Everyone knows they need as much of a "win/win" process as is possible to negotiate.

"It's the constant threats that made my mind up. " - absolutely talbot, Europeans just don't get the British response to threats do they?
Be very careful what you say about the Germans. Churchill said they were either at your feet or at your throat- it rather looks as if they have every intention of raising their level of aggression- a spectacle some of the nations of Europe remember all too well.
