The annoying thing is - this kind of thing is happening all over the world, but for some reason, other horrors are ignored.
There was the story about the three men in Kamchatka who stabbed and then set alight a gay man because they were “convinced of the non-traditional sexual orientation of their fellow villager.”
Guess what sentences they got?
Ten years each.
Just think about that.
Ten years each.
And then there was the story about a gay man from the southern Russian city of Volgograd who was tortured to death in an apparent hate crime, was sexually assaulted with beer bottles, and had his skull “smashed with a stone.”
Not sure what sentences they got.
The thing that really irritates me (and some of my mates) is the two-facedness of those who purport to support gay people when the story is about Africa, Jamaica or the Middle East - but they stay curiously silent when the story is about Russia.
The lack of condemnation makes me wonder whether there's some ulterior agenda at play.
...or maybe it's because these stories about Russia don't make national headlines?

Animals. The editor should have known particularly in that part of the world free speech is a non starter, not to mention bearing a title relating to something that goes against all their narrow minded religious teaching, it would be bound to bring him some kind of sorrow....... alas the ultimate sorrow.

I normally agree with you over a range of topics, but honest - I really don't see that.
Perhaps it's because I'm lucky to work with a younger, more 'metropolitan'
crowd , but what I see from everyone I work with and socialise with is a complete 180 degree difference to attitudes in the 80s.
I was thinking about it the other day - I'm having a very small wedding later this year, and am not able to invite anyone from work (it's just close friends and family). I've had several colleagues asking me whether I'm going to have a separate celebration, for those who can't attend.
Now think of that for a moment.
In the year 2016, there are people who actively want to celebrate a same sex union. Not because they're being PC, but because they're simply...cool with it.
I've had people who after finding out I'm getting married ask, "So...are you going to adopt kids?" (the emphatic answer is "No bloody way").
Now...cast your mind back to the 1980s. Back then, could you imagine being where we are now?
It's mental - in a good way.
This is why I'm so proud of the UK. Same sex wedding, adoption and equal right came in, and we just got on with it (well, those of us who aren't old, right wing or religious nutbags).

No...not people I know in real life. It's something I've noticed online. When Russia rolled out it's anti-gay laws, I noticed a surprising number of commentators who held the view, "Well, it's just to protect families etc etc".
And when stories of gays being murdered after the state introduced these laws, there was a conspicuous silence amongst the aforementioned commentators.
In fact, there was a story about a gay couple being severely beaten in a restaurant in the US earlier this month (they'd been seen by their attacker kissing).
It's shocking the responses that story got...the same people who condemn ISIS for their barbaric treatment of gay people applauded the attacker, saying that the gay couple deserved it for 'parading their perversion in in public'.
To me - it smacks of hypocrisy.
But again - that wasn't on AB...just on a certain newspaper site.

That didn’t occur to me – but then I’m not ‘touchy’. That said, my links weren’t intended to encourage the thread to become a celebration of gay rights, but rather to highlight the continuing mindless slaughter of innocent people – homosexuals, Christians, Atheists etc., by those who can only be described as maniacs.

I remember watching a programme some time ago on the persecution of gay people in Russia and it was awful, so frightening. There were vigilante gangs seeking them out every night in order to punish them for their sexual orientation. It was discussed on here I think at the time. Some very brave people must have been making themselves targets by speaking on camera during the making of the film. I doubt things have got better for them since then.
Why is it so hard for some people just to live and let live?

Over-analysing stuff is my game. I can't help thinking that you're trying to sat that a bunch of the most vehement contributors on AN Other paper's website are Russian-backed stooges, or something?
I mean, why not have hate-spreaders, creating rifts in the social fabric of rival countries?

Nope, you've beaten me to it: {Racial stereotype} does {evil act} to {victim category} supports hypothesis that this stereotype is bad all over. If victim happens to be gay then all the better: no-one can resist the story because that would be un-PC or even betray sympathy with the perpetrators.
White perpetrator fails to serve the daily narrative. So it's not a fondness for Russia or a fear of Putin's tentacles just that Russia is one of the few places where it is happening that way around.

The bible, if I'm not mistaken, offers no rationalisation either. It is just straightforward intolerance and specifies a punishment.
This isn't an R&S thread but knowing that the abrahamic behaviour code is at the heart of the historical treatment of homosexuality, then we are getting somewhere.

The overwhelming majority of people can. It's the scumbag minority of cowards who find strength in groups or behind their keyboards who can't.
But looking on the positive side - we are light years ahead of where we were 20, or even 10 years ago.
I too saw that documentary, and I found it as appalling as the Stephen Fry documentary (when he went to Africa to challenge political leaders over their stance of gay rights...their stance being, "Jail them").
