The op was a non event.Having got me in the night before they prepped me and found a bed in another ward.I was 2nd on list for aortic stent.Yesterday @6pm I was given a surgical gown and told to have a shower using surgical scrub. Came back to ward where I was shaved around op insertion site.Nil to drink from 0900hrs. At 1715 some po faced underling git was despatched from theatre to say sorry your op has been cancelled. He came out with NHS B.S. Excuse No 2. "There was an emergency op this morning that took a long time"
I was given that B.S. last time this op was cancelled on 23rd March. Truth of the matter ,as told by a charming Chinese ward sister, was that all the surgeons attended a Board of Governors Trust meeting that ran far later than the 11am Theatre start time. I was told the theatres normal knock off time was 8p.m. but I suppose the links beckoned these professors before the light failed.
Once again our NHS has let me down. In future I shall question every request from them. Like,"For what purpose do you want me to attend?" What will be the result of me attending? Can hyou guarantee a bed if I do attend again? Will someone actually be there to do the op if I attend?
A pox on the lot of them at St Georges Vascular Dept, lying gits.

So sorry to learn of this Retro.
We hear this sort of thing all the time these days. It must have been very frustrating for you, and you have my every sympathy. Whenever I have to attend Hospital for any reason, I have to be dragged kicking and screaming, and what happened to you would have made me even more ill. Its an atrocious way to a Hospital to behave. Have they given you another slot yet ?
As the real reason that your Op was cocked up, I would have thought you have a good reason to make an official complaint, especially as it seems that you were lied to.

No new date yet. When I told the consultant that it was the 2nd time my op had been cancelled.He replied,"But you didn't actually get to hospital the first time". As if I should take comfort from that. "How long ago was your first appointment cancelled?" When I told him 23rd March he just shrugged and said he doubted I would wait that long for the third summons.
I asked him when my aortic aneurism was considered an emergency because once it ruptures you bleed to death in 3 mins.
If it hadn't ballooned to the critical dimension that it had got to I would not yet be considered for surgery and it would be just monitored. He just limply replied, "Sorry"

I didn't bother. He looked the type who wouldn't recognise the truth if it bit him on the butt. What annoyed me was No 1 on the list (same OP) had waited all day with me. He went to theatre at about 3.30pm for a 90-120 min operation. I was No2 of two on the list.If No 1' op finished at 5.30pm then there would still be 2 1/2 hours left for my op. I asked if they could do it the next day as I was prepped up ,bloods had been taken and a cannular in my arm ready for a drip etc. Just shook his head and said "Sorry".
Sorry to hear of your experience retro. As someone who works in Theatre it is sadly a regular occurrence and happens on a daily basis in my Trust.
If it's of any comfort though we've got plenty of money for the Portuguese and Bulgarian interpreters we've had attend our place 3 times in the last fortnight in order that their offspring get off to the best possible start......

Hi retrocop.....I haven't posted in AB since 12th March because I feel that AB is going downhill. However, Not as fast as the NHS which, in my opinion, is being hampered by Consultants. Perhaps Sqad has a view on what I am saying and will comment accordingly.
I was air-lifted by Helicopter to Hospital following a heart attack and cannot complain that I was treated immediately and duly stented. Nevertheless, I was Not happy with the Consultant who made Ward visits and appeared to enjoy standing around a trolley in the middle of the ward and boasting to 'Interns' about his knowledge and the cases with which he had been involved. In due course I was led to believe by Nursing Staff that he had not taken part in my operation but was someone who was respected as a Consultant, although it was doubtful if he ever entered the Operating Theatre.

blimey retro I tbought you were post procedure and firing on all cylinders

They are ... overloading their lists which is not particularly good practice in order to ensure 100 % utilisation
they should have been able to tell that no 2 (you) was not able to be done earlier than 1700
Radiology depts dont normally work until 8 pm
and I can tell you - you dont do radiology if you want to work until 20 00
you do something like ..... A+E - which is why there is a shortage of them

hmm it would be nice to think that the B of G got their hands dirty running the hospital from day to day but they dont

is ... the consultants work thro the 48 h strike.... and the admin / B o G say o there is your usual 35 - 40 h to do excluding the usual consultant on call to do now o and by the way we are very thankful etc ....
and if I were a consultant I would say
No I am sorry there isnt - I have done my bit running the hospital in time of need and now I go home and have a sleep .... but that of course is another story

um ... you want to have your procedure ( endovar stenting ) done by a consultant - rather than ask "are you gonna do it or no ? "
it would be sensible to ask the person taking the consent - who is gonna do the procedure and
also what are his ( the operators ) results ?

Or are they one and the same, within the NHS?

medical consultants are permanent employees
the other consultant drift in an out ( large fees )
arent permanent
do chores and reports - usually telling the admin what they know anyway.
mgt consultants walk in and charge - lots
here is me making CMFT in manchester tell mehow much they had squandered on a childrens hospital exercise - erm £1m - no wonder I had diffculty getting them to cough !
