Although it is reported that there are an increasing number of deaths both of new born babies as well as mothers, with some of our maternity services, but will this 'in-hand' £3,000 be an incentive for some mothers to take the risk of acquiring the services of non-professional midwives, as was once the practice?

Forgive me ladies if I have not worded this properly, but as a mere elderly gentleman I am sure you will understand where I am coming from?

Why go to Hospital if you aren't ill?

As Clover says different arrangement will be made for those who need more medical intervention.

I really wish I'd had home births. My births were all straight forward but my pregnancies weren't so I was strongly advised against it.

Daughter had a home birth for her 3rd. It was amazing. So easy and 2 midwives came as soon as she went into labour. 2 hours and it was all over

I've just managed to see the DM report and reads as a mass of contradictions and lies. On one hand it says women will be encouraged to give birth at home or in small midwife-led hospitals, then it says the NHS is trying to close small hospitals.
It also says that doctors will work out with women how to spend their £3,000, but Woofgang - who I am more inclined to believe - says that's just an average figure that the NHS budgeters work with.
I just don't think I'll bother reading a DM article again

Two of my daughter's three were at home, the third was 2 minutes after she arrived at the hospital as the midwife thought she needed help - never mind.

Cos our stupid education authorities allow parents to choose to send little Chardonnay to a school miles away from where they live, meaning they have to drive their gas-guzzler to and from school every day

Joe - My kids go/went to Catholic schools. There is only one Catholic upper in the town I live.

My four Grandchildren all go to Catholic schools too and they go the one that serves the parish they live in - all but one walks there.

I gave birth twice on the NHS. The second was not straightforward (placenta praevia for anyone interested and I did need surgical back-up). The first, however, 1975, was a bit of a nightmare. This idea sounds like heaven to me, it really does.

I wish I could remember how much mums were paid to have home births in the 1960s. If I remember correctly it was offered if the mother had already had at least one baby without complications.
