I dont think I would be very happy if one of my children went there, considering the ongoing problems around Europe..

For goodness sake. Never mind about lessons on Islam let us have lessons throughout the UK on British Values & the necessity of integration. Please let me remind you once more this is a British country & if foreign tribes wish to settle here the least they should do is learn our language & customs.

AOG - No they haven't.
But if children *are* going to be taught about religion, they ought to be taught about all of them.....or preferably none at all.
AOG - //Read the comments from those who are forever going on about banning religion from our schools.

Their views have now completely changed for some 'known' reason. //

To whom is your post addressed?

And who are those who are 'forever going on ... ' - without some indication, no-one is going to know to which posts you are referring.
AOG - //The problem being that Islam has not moved on, and the kids have only to read the papers or to watch the TV news to realise that. //

I have to confirm that absolutely nothing in the massive amount of posts you have posted about Muslims gives me the slightest indication that you are in a position to comment on its movement in any direction.

I think its rather a good idea...how else are kids going to learn about other religions and cultures ? Perhaps the School should invite Jewish, Catholic, Buddhist, etc as well. Some should be welcomed surely ?

Perhaps the kids be learning, won't grow up to be as ignorant as some of the parents ?

Education is the key here.

/// The entire point about Anjem Choudary is that he categorically does not speak for the majority of Muslims - only the small extreme, but seriously over-publicised, minority. ///

It was you who brought Tommy Robinson into the debate, and as you have often said he doesn't speak for the majority only the small extreme, but seriously over-publicised, minority.

Your words, not mine.

/// As jack advises, the gentleman chosen would appear perfectly capable. ///

And how could Jack or you, possibly know that?
What a load of rubbish.
"If I feared every single snake on the planet because I believed that every single one was poisonous, I would serious benefit from being advised which ones are absolutely harmless, then I can live perfectly peacefully alongside the harmless ones, and avoid the dangerous ones.
Thinking every snake is poisonous is ignorance.
Learning that not all snakes are poisonous is education.
Apply that to the Muslim faith, and ta-daaah - my statement becomes true."

Who thinks all snakes are poisonous, Andy?
Who knows which ones are and which ones aren't?
Who can tell the difference?

Now if we're comparing Islam to the study of snakes, let's discuss education. A good thing, innit? The Islamic terrorists claim divine sanction for their acts. What FACTS do you know about Islam which convinces you that their toxic version of it wrong? What FACTS do you know about Islam which convinces you that mainstream Islam is non-toxic and tolerant?

If you can't give me some facts about Islam you have no right to describe bigots and Islamophobes like me as ignorant.
whiskeyron - //Please let me remind you once more this is a British country & if foreign tribes wish to settle here the least they should do is learn our language & customs. //

If you are so insular as to think that everyone who lives here has to be like us, why bother educating anyone about any other country or culture?

No more American TV / French Italian / Indian / Chinese Tai / food.

Fish and chips all round, and bomb the Tunnel - who needs the rest of the world?

I think we do.
"Education eradicates ignorance, and without ignorance there is no fear".
That looks the kind of thing you might have printed on plastic hanging by ribbon on the kitchen wall. That aside it's quite generalising and totally untrue. I could know every fact about cancer, nuclear bombs, the mind of a serial killer, salmonella, bombs on planes - I'd still fear them.

And in case it needs clarifying i'm not comparing muslims to any of the above.
I was at school in the early 60s and we learned about other religions in RE. How else do children find these things out?
Can't we allow the School to make that judgement AOG ?

Joanne Williams, the school's headteacher, said ::::

"As a school we feel it is important that in our modern secular society children are given a wide range of opportunities to learn about, interact with and learn tolerance and respect for other cultures, religions and communities. "

I for one, would be perfectly happy to send any of my kids to a School that has a Head as enlightened as her.
Who on this thread knows anything about the history of Islam and in particular its relationship with the West?
@whiskeryron

'Please let me remind you once more this is a British country & if foreign tribes wish to settle here the least they should do is learn our language & customs.'

I had to chuckle over this - all those British expats dressing like the locals and going to classes to learn the language?
VE.....Give Naomi a nudge someone....she has read the Koran apparently, cover to cover !

vetuste - //I don't think much of the logic of the first statement I've quoted, Andy. Why do you think that people would fear Islam less if they knew more about it? //

/// If I feared every single snake on the planet because I believed that every single one was poisonous, I would serious benefit from being advised which ones are absolutely harmless, then I can live perfectly peacefully alongside the harmless ones, and avoid the dangerous ones. ///

Bad analogy I'm afraid.

With a little knowledge of snakes, one knows which ones are poisonous and therefore it is most wise to avoid those.

So please educate us Mr Hughes and tell us all, how can we distinguish the less harmful Muslims from the dangerous ones?
"...interact with and learn tolerance and respect for other cultures, religions and communities. "

Suppose there is a culture, or a religion which does NOT tolerate and respect cultures and religions other than its own, Mikey. Do You think this is possible?
Are muslim schools carrying out reciprocal gestures?
Are believers in other faiths welcomed into Muslim schools to talk about them?

It is too late then, as we have already witnessed.
