It appears that our culture of accepting arrest for drink-driving as an occupational hazard is not disappearing as quickly as we might hope.

My views on drink driving are very simple - zero tolerance, lifetime ban.

Any thoughts?

Correction, a couple of other countries have a no-alcohol policy - I wonder how successful they have been?

As a matter of interest you don't actually imbibe alcohol yourself do you?

many people driving to work after a Christmas party the night before would not pass a Breathalyzer if there was zero tolerance. Surely there has to be a little lee-way? // No leeway it's quite simple really if you are going to drink ANY alcohol YOU DO NOT DRIVE Simples.

whiskeyron -" if you are going to drink ANY alcohol YOU DO NOT DRIVE Simples. ' Can you give a time limit on that statement then - 12 hours? 24hrs? a week? Abstain forever as you need your car to get to work?
I enjoy an imbibe but I agree with Andy in this instance. Its easy enough to buy a breathalyser if you aren’t sure whether you have cleared the alcohol after a good old imbibe. Both my late DH and I worked in jobs where you could not enter the work premises with any alcohol in the bloodstream (him the oil industry, me the NHS) and its perfectly possible.

back again - had to nip out.

OK, I would be happy to concede the absolute minimum level to allow for medication - but anything above that, and you are off the road forever.

Retrocop - you are right, I don't drink alcohol. If I ruled the world, I'd have it obliterated from the planet tomorrow, but I would settle for a sensible and responsible attitude to drinking and driving.

I would say twenty-four hours from drinking to driving. If you are going to a party, then plan ahead, that is what public transport and taxis are for - if you can afford to drink you can afford to get about without your car to keep others - and let's not forget, yourself - safe.

///If I ruled the world, I'd have it obliterated from the planet tomorrow///

Gosh, that would put an awful lot of people involved in the manufacture, transportation and retail of it out of work Worldwide.
What would you do about that?

Enough to drive you to drink!
I think one of the most sensible suggestions is to buy a breathalyzer kit to be sure you are safe to drive . How about all cars having a test that you have to do before the ignition on the car will work?
Hmm....well, when we have the world ruler elections I'm afraid you won't get my vote, Andy.....unless it changes my position in the queue of course....☺

I never even think about the consequences to be honest - it is one of those fleeting fantasies that we all have, but to which we don't seriously attach meaningful thought, much less analysis.

As a tee-totaller, I find the behaviour of drunken people to be rather infantile and boorish, but since I don't mix with any, it's not a problem.

I haven't read all the posts but I get the impression that bang go my cough sweets!
And also your portion of Sherry trifle to complete your Christmas dinner Naomi. :-)
Drat! :o(
Naomi, a humbug dipped in brandy is NOT a cough sweet.
No? Bah, humbug!
If you go out on a works do get bladdered and think your OK to drive the next day then you deserve to lose your licence.

I wonder if some against zero tolerance would change their mind if they lost a family member or close friend to a drink driver?
he he.
"Before Barbara Castle" (she was the transport minister who introduced the breathalyser) almost no one ever thought of not drinking while driving, before the drink driving laws were brought in, I myself have been known to drive home at dawn from all night parties, and drove perfectly safe.

Also in summer months most drove out to country pubs and after an evening there drove home afterwards.

Whilst in the RAF, we would drive to certain functions, and after a good night by all, we would drive back to base in over loaded vehicles, with guys standing on the running boards, and rear bumpers of the car.
