Don't get me started!! I used to have grammar, vocabulary and spelling lessons as well as literature (pupils learnt poems even) when I taught in tough Sec. Mods.. By the time I left teaching pupils could take annotated texts into exams! For 'annotated' read 'exam-passing hints from teachers' - and they were incapable of memorising almost anything. We fought a long and losing battle over mobile phones, parents complained and complained if we removed them from their darlings told us we were endangering their children's safety!
