Mikey, //"Nice to see most of you attacking the messenger, rather than debating the issue, "//

Seems to me the messenger on this occasion is John Major, Mikey. You’re not doing a bad job of attacking him.
Major was/is a good guy, betrayed by the "***", a great aficionado of cricket (so he can't be all bad), He has an unblemished record,- Edwina C. notwithstanding, so he's worth a shout, listen to what he says and if you don't like it, no one is forcing you to acquiesce.

Khandro....an unblemished record ?

He was responsible for the worst loss in Tory party history ! Isn't that even a teeny, weeny blemish ?
mikey; Despite John Major's achievements as Prime Minister many don't remember him fondly. They remember the landslide defeat of 1997. They remember Maastricht. The years of sleaze. The Spitting Image caricature. And, sadly, the affair with Edwina Currie. But put all of that out of your mind for a moment and remember the 1992 general election. It was the election conservatives shouldn't really have won. The poll tax/ community charge was fresh in the memory. But Major won and he won more votes than any British party leader has ever won – before or since. The most votes Margaret Thatcher ever received were 13,760,935 (in 1987). Blair won 13,518,167 votes in his 1997 landslide victory, and at the last election 10,703,654 voted for Cameron's Conservative Party. In 1992 John Major won 14,093,007 votes.
Not bad eh? :0)

I have given Major credit for winning the 1992 Election Khandro, and, just between the two of us, I rather like him ! ....For the reasons that I have given on this thread and many times before. But he lost MPs during the 1992 Election, thus making it even easier for Blair to soundly thrash him 5 years later.

So I will meet you halfway on this....Major wasn't a complete pillock, he was actually a rather decent chap, but the concept that he had an unblemished record just isn't true. He ended up with the worst record that any Tory PM ever had. His lack of rigour, together with the help of his Bar Stewards put his party out of power for 3 consecutive Elections. A political disaster.
OK, halfway it is.
I just wonder if it is at all possible to find any ex PM from any party with an unblemished record .Any one who believes that lives in the land of the fairies.
