They were discussing this on the radio this morning, and apparently the National Weather Center have lists of names and they simply rotate them every 6 years or so!  Any hurricane that is particularly bad ie Floyd & Katrina to name two are retired so to speak and not used again!!  Think they said that the next one is called Hurricane Lee!

On a lighter note I have heard it said that they are usually named after women as they come in a frenzy and take your house and car with them when they go!!!!

Note that the last answer in that thread contradicts everything else posted.  The lists are pre-determined and you can probably already view the names for 2006.  Therefore, they are not named after the person who discovers them! :-)

Hurricane names are a set list that they alternate every 6 years - names used last year will be used again in 2010. When there is a major storm - like Katrina that name is retired, and replaced. Until 1979 only female names were used - since then it alternates M/F.

Atlantic vs Pacific etc have different lists.

They also start with A and go on to however many hurricanes there are in that season. Katrina starts with a K so there has been 11 hurricanes so far this season...

Guys, where there is the word "here", (red and underlined up above this post), it's a link to the thread where the question was answered adequately before.  You're clearly both very knowledgable, but it might be a good idea to share some original information with other ABers... don't waste your valuable time and keystrokes repeating things that have already been said! :-)  And welcome to AB... hope to see you round.  :-)
