I'm with TTT here. I don't expect what I am going to say to be popular but I am going to go ahead anyway ! These tattoos just look childish. When I was a boy in the 50's and early 60's, we used to buy packs of bubble gum with transfers in them, in the way home from school. You licked these paper transfers and then stuck them on your arm. But as soon as you got home, Mum would...

The people in the link given, look perfectly fine to me and I would not recoil from them in any walk of life if I met them.
Mamya, you (and others) were implying that making a judgement about people's character based on their choice of tattoos is akin to judging them on any other aspect of their physical appearance. I was simply disagreeing.
My point being that some aspects of one's appearance are chosen, others aren't. Nothing to get upset about.
Not in the least upset - I judge people as people not based on whatever adornments or not they have.

Everyone's opinion is valid I just didn't want mine misconstrued because I wrote it badly.
Mamyalynne, //I judge people as people not based on whatever adornments or not they have. //

If you were an employer in a business where your employees' appearance mattered, you wouldn't be able to afford to do that - and that's what this thread is about. As I said before, high ideals don't work.
Ludwig you are right, they choose to have tattoos or not, a life choice, albeit a permanent one unlike hair colour...wonderful pink, blue, green etc. tattoos are like marmite, love 'em or hate them and those of us who dislike them I doubt will change their opinion. For a job expectation however they made their choice and should understand the consequences if they don't get the job tho, some see to think it's their right whatever they portray themselves as...c'est la vie?
from the link - "I lost my job because of my tattoos" The first example didn`t. She gave up her job because of her tattoos, even though her employers were willing to find a solution to the situation. I don`t have any sympathy.
".....children seemed to like talking about my tattoo...."

Thats not what youre employed to do! Any wonder kids leave school iggrent

Naomi,I agree that sadly that constriction is still prevalent - people I have employed have been a mixture of both front of house (with the public) and behind the scenes in varying degrees.

I have never run a bank or high class department store etc.

Personally I wouldn't be troubled if served in a bank, store or treated at a doctors or dentists to see Tattoos on show - but as you have worked out by now, I am not bothered by them.
Tambo, the young woman in question was a lunchtime supervisor, not a teacher.
"My eldest daughter has lots of tattoos, the largest is a scene from the mad hatter's tea party that goes right across her lower back from just above her bum to her waist. She also has very large fairy wings tattooed on her upper back."

Oh Dear !!!

Let's forget about pre-judging people based on their tattoos. The plain fact is that most of them (the tattoos, that is) are simply horrible and unsightly.
Tattoos seem to be a very British trend for some reason. Yes, you see them on American bikers etc but you don`t see them on younger people to the extent that you do here. I have just been on holiday and the tourists were mainly British and Russian. You could tell which was which purely by who had tatts and who didn`t. And as for the locals - you didn`t see any tatts at all. I hope it isn`t just a trend that people are going to regret in the future.
Horrible and unsightly to some and beautiful works of art to others.
My daughter can choose to add whatever adornments she wishes to her own body.
My thoughts exactly NJ, well said in your common sense way as usual. You certainly 'speak for me' in many comments you make. Oh and can someone pro tattoo, please tell me why tattoos on your back or where the wearer cannot see them, what is the point of that pray tell??
Daffy some ARE lovely works of art which should IMO be displayed elsewhere...body defacing in my opinion is very sad.
Why does there have to be a point? It isn't your body that is tattooed then it has nothing to do with you does it?!
to entertain the punters, dunnit. ;-)
You just called everyone with a tattoo on their back (including me and my daughter) a prostitute. I wish I could swear on here because I have some choice phrases and words going through my head that would apply to you right now.
Ah but he put a 'wink' at the end - the refuge of the desperate stereotype user.

I completely understand the employers` take on tattoos but I would never judge anyone because of their tattoos. I have met enough people at work to know that the smart suited businessman can be a complete dick whilst the lad in shorts and tatts can be lovely.
