Ignorant drivers who fail to acknowledge you after you let them through when there's an obstruction on your side of the road

How difficult is it for some people to raise their hand above the dashboard?

So they have right of way if the obstruction is on your side of the road, why should you be thanked?

Have I misunderstood?

I agree, eccles - if the obstruction is on your side, it's not your courtesy which has let them through, it's your observation of the Highway Code.

Good manners cost nothing

Not hard work to acknowledge someones courtesy is it?

It's not courtesy tho, just the rules of the road.
Exactly Boxtops.

JL, I don't understand where manners and courtesy come into the equation?

My local annoyance is with the drivers on the dual carriageway who will not pull into the outside lane, even though there is plenty of space out there, and let me on from the side turning or slip road.
I understand what you mean Joe.....suburban avenue, cars parked all over place....not difficult to raise a hand of thanks if oncoming vehicle has flashed you through

x x
There are more things about other drivers' traits which I'd be far more irritated about that this - like failing to signal at a junction or roundabout, which is prevalent round here.
Living between two towns, I notice a distinct difference in the way you are thanked from one to the other, the larger town hardly any thanks, the smaller town much more so, what's that all about I wonder.

'JL, I don't understand where manners and courtesy come into the equation? '

Because some drivers ignore the 'rules' and overtake obstructions on their side causing driver who has right of way to slow down/stop

Maybe you'd be happier if they did that?

Nail on the head girl
You never mentioned an obstruction on their side of the road.........

So if someone holds a door open for you you wouldn't acknowledge their good manners?
Holding a door open isn't a law, giving way to oncoming traffic when there is an obstruction on your side of the road *is*.
By me it's ignoring Give Way signs or not looking properly, see and hear so many near misses and seen a fair few crashes.

'Holding a door open isn't a law, giving way to oncoming traffic when there is an obstruction on your side of the road *is*.'

It's a rule in the Highway Code, if it was 'law' people would be prosecuted if they ignored the rule

How many do you know who have been?
I had no idea there was a doorway code. Nor do I recall an obligation in the Highway Code to acknowledge the graciousness of other road users.

Perhaps you'd look it up whilst I pour myself a drink JL.
My gripe is about drivers who stop at roundabouts and THEN look to see if all is clear. What's wrong with checking BEFORE you get to the roundabout?

'Nor do I recall an obligation in the Highway Code to acknowledge the graciousness of other road users. '

It's called good manners, which cost nothing

Ignorant drivers don't have good manners, or are just too plain lazy to briefly raise their hand from the steering wheel
I'm with you Joe. I don't bother whose side of the road is blocked, often it's a mixture of parked cars on both so it's irrelevant. If I hold back and clear the path for oncoming vehicle I expect to be thanked, and I always acknowledge when someone else has given way. I guess from many of the posts on here there are a lot of ignorant bullies who assume right of way in any circumstances.
The ones who don't acknowledge courtesy by others should be exiled to a special city called Anarchy where they can demolition-derby away to their hearts' content.
