It does seem a strange tale, if true. I had not realised their Muslim customers were in the majority.

Given that many non-Mulsim dislike the concept of Halal and do not trust the stunning claims, one would have thought it was a retrograde move on their part. But I guess some groups are more strident in getting their way whilst other groups simply complain, as if they were British or something.
takeover?

changing just under 200 outlets to "halal" represents less than one tenth of the total subway branches in the UK and Ireland. at least they're being up front about it.

far worse in my book are those islamic-owned pizza parlours (and there are plenty in the midlands) who sell turkey slices as "ham" in flagrant breach of consumer legislation.
Ah re-reading it is only some branches.
I'm not sure I understand a word of that.

ham and bacon has been substituted for turkey ham and rashers

Is that the wrong way round? Turkey instead of ham, not ham instead of turkey?

It says halal abbatoirs kill the animals while they're fully conscious and they shouldn't be stunned. Subway says they *are* stunned. And yet it's halal.
It's hardly new anyway. Many Subway branches, such as the one at the Stratford Centre in London, have been 'halal' for years.
Either the other way round, Jno, or (better) replacing 'for' with 'by'
or just replaced with replaced...
Why biff the bacon to make way for Halal - can the two not exist in the same store?
Question Author
Mushroom - my reference to 'takeover' (note the quotes) was referring to population demographic, not necessarily the actions of a minimal number of Subway stores.
1996: American company makes commercial decision to open stores in UK.
2014: same American company makes commercial decision to change the menu in some of its outlets.

Commercialism in action.
// Where will this 'takeover' end //

I agree, our High Streets have far too many American eateries.

// The sandwich chain said 'following a strong demand from our Muslim customers', 185 outlets in the UK and Ireland have introduced the meat, which is prepared under strict Islamic rules. //

Subway are responding to their customers preferences. They could ignore their customers, but will lose money. As the purpose of these restaurants is to make as much money as possible, then they will supply food that their customers want.

If there is a backlash and people start the boycott the horrible places, then they will start to lose money and they will change there minds.

Market forces at work. There are a couple of Subway branches near me and they do seem to attract a lot of Asian customers, possibly they have using halal products for a long while
As I suspected, Subway introduced halal meat in its shops in European in 2004. They introduce a policy to sell halal meat in the UK in 2007. There was a campaign soon after to boycott the shops. I guess that didn't work.
For Funks Sake... seriously! I'd shop elsewhere if F**king religion started to dictate what I can Eat.
Apologies for this link from 2011

Seems like an old story reheated.
And you are not safe in KFC...

nobody's stopping you from eating, Arksided; you decide what you want and look for someone selling it.
Jno.. Exactly. But I find it hard to believe that a reputable chain store has stopped selling the things we like because of a False religion belief. Selfish!
Arksided

I repeat. Market Forces.
Subway are franchise businesses. Many shops are run by muslims, and target muslim customers. Advertising their Halal credentials is part of that.
