The idea seems good but why have we had to wait until 2016, and why include a quote from a long past speech "“I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat.” ?

/// Bank of England's new £5 note in a redesign that governor Sir Mervyn King said could lead to it being redefined as "a Winston". ///

/// “Our banknotes acknowledge the life and work of great Britons. Sir Winston Churchill was a truly great British leader, orator and writer," Sir Mervyn said on Friday. ///

Just checked with my son.

He's never heard of Sir Frank Whittle.
Bowie
Who's gonna argue with that - realistically
Just wondering: the picture used appears to be one taken by Karsh of Ottawa. Is their any remaining copyright in it? Karsh, supposedly, had difficulty with Churchill, who was an impatient sitter. As Churchill sat there smoking a cigar, Karsh, using a long wire to the shutter, snatched the cigar from Churchill's lips and took the shot. The resulting look of Churchillian defiance was really childish anger at having his favourite cigar snatched away!
I suppose it could lead to a fiver being called a Winston or even a WC

I would pose for my picture to be put on a note. Would have to be wide enough note to put in my tail.

should be people who are truly noteworthy. Churchill has now been added, some of the suggestions are too early. And it doesn't surprise me that some don't know many of our notables, like Frank Whittle,
he would be a good choice... as would Tommy Flowers.

/// I don't know Mr Git - Oswald Moseley perhaps? ;-) ///

/// AOG what about Enoch Powell or even Alf Garnett, they should appeal to your sense of arrogant and blinkered Britishness. ///

Such a pity some are not adult or clever enough to join in a perfectly reasonable debate.

ABers such as these two are simply Trolls, they serve no purpose whatsoever on this site, except to try and create ill feelings.

There's no need to get your knickers in a twist then go all bitchy AOG, it's just a bit of humour.

Selective quoting from aog AGAIN
What a little weasel!

his linked article continues:

/Research also suggests, however, that familiarity with “others” over time gives us hope to reduce prejudice. One psychological study showed that whites, when viewing pictures of black strangers, showed activity in the part of the brain that is associated with fear, which they didn’t for white strangers. When showed pictures of familiar black people, however, they did not show fear.//

So 'familiarity' is the answer - such as living in multiple ethnic communities...
What linked article Zeuhl. And why do you have to be so rude?.
The post is now in its proper thread on 'multi cultural teaching'

And it wasn't rudeness

It was an appropriate comment on misleading selective quoting
I dislike such dishonesty - especially when it is habitual
Whoever appears on the notes in the future, they will have to have been dead for a very long time, with no skeletons and a completely unblemished character.
Imagine if Jimmy Saville had been put on the back of our notes, they would all be being recalled now and hastily reprinted.
Doug Ellis.
I think sir frank whittle might have invented the bouncing bomb but i'm probably mixing him up,
oh i was very close lol
I think we should have Valerie Singleton on the back of a proper £1 note becauseI hate £1 coins they make your purse hard to close, though it would be awful to go back to calling it a nicker
Frank whittle invented the jet engine.
Barnes Wallace invented the bouncing bomb.
