I somehow always have Michael Winner and Brian Sewell wrapped together in my mind. Both had affected speech patterns, and both could be very waspish in their comments. Still, I bet there are a few restaurants mourning the loss of M.W. They can all "Calm Down" now.
Liked his column in the times. It stopped very abruptly without explanation a few weeks ago.
He always claimed he owed £9,000,000 to the bank. They'll be mourning, if true.
I didn't like him much as a person, but found his columns and books very amusing - maybe this is why he got married to his long standing girlfriend after all these years (in which case I hope that he didn't owe the bank 9,000,000 for her sake!)
I think MW played up to a 'character' and the private man was very very different. I recall him steaming in to defend some lesbians who were in receipt of rude observations about their sexuality - he gave it both barrells!
I also recall his This is Your Life, and his genuine discomfort when guests pointed out his charitable works, which he had conducted without fanfare for many years.
