James Murdoch says that this Sunday is the last edition of the News of the World. - Measured response to the crisis engulfing News International, or pulling up the drawbridge to protect the chosen ones, such as himself and Rebekah Brooks?

Just seen the announcement on teletext ... it is true ...whoopee! ...
until it reappears in another guise.
anything that keeps lawyers busy and off the streets is a good idea, ABerrant, and if Murdoch has to pay for it, well, that's even better. Won't happen, sadly.
That was a fairly comprehensive reaction to public and advertisers opinion, and lets hope they don't just open up same paper, under a different name

Ironically, The News of the World, by closing down, has become "The News of the World" :)
Ruddy hell it's already on Wiki!!! - I only went there to see when it started cos it is an old newspaper, and that in it's way is sad.

i did watch the live sky feed, with James Murdoch, well thats it then
It will probably reappear in some other form. It would not be wise to have so many people who know where the bodies are buried being made redundant.
those are the people who won't be made redundant, it'll just be the tea-ladies and receptionists and crossword compilers who wind up on the street.
It's not all bad, I've just phoned work and told them to up the standing order for this last issue as it will sell like hotcakes,
They will do it from prison and call it 'News from the Screws'.
Can you still sue a newspaper if it no longer exists?

Is News Corp still liable?
Fantastic news - even if it does reappear under a new title it will still be under scrutiny. Nothing to say they've got away either, just because they've stopped the print they can still answer for their actions.

WooHoo.
whoever published it is responsible, I guess, Gromit. It's NI, not the paper itself, that's been dishing out compensation to the hackees as far as I know. But the paper had clearly become toxic and Murdoch evidently thought closure was the only option - especially since they're desperate to get the Sky takeover through.

Thoush some people loathe all journalists, it's likely that only 5% or less of the ones on the NoW had anything to do with all this; but they'll all be losing their jobs. When (the probably next step) the Sun goes to seven-day publication, some may be rehired. And part of the ploy is surely to keep Rebekah Wade's job.

Andy Coulson's job must still be in jeopardy, though. If Murdoch can close down a whole newspaper, why can't Cameron dump one tainted PR chief?
Good Riddance ... Barstuards.
what would you call a replacement paper? Try clicking on this:

The Sunday Hacker perhaps?
closing down ? well i suppose that legally allows them to shred all the old files and paperwork then does it ?
That Crystal Tips lookalike who manages the UK Ops will have to go and get a job selling newspapers on a street corner somewhere.
actually, now I think of it, Coulson has already left Cameron, hasn't he? Not sure what he's doing now. There were rumours that he was about to be arrested over police bribes, but they've been denied.
