This gentleman refused to apologise to the parents of Robert and Christianne who died in Corfu. Was he right? I would like to think that in this situation I would apologise as it would be the right thing to do.

A very sad thing to have happened, but I can see his viewpoint

///Mr Fankhauser said Thomas Cook, which had a policy of avoiding hotels where rooms had gas hot water appliances, was lied to by people at the hotel who said there was no gas supply at the complex.///
He said he felt incredibly sorry but I expect by apologising it's admiitting some responsibility. One could say though that TC should inspect their properties rather than accepting the word of the owners.
It appears callous, but legally, an apology on behalf of the company can be taken as an admission of liability, and that would open the company to a civil suit, which may still happen.

For the same reason, the company declined to answer questions in court, as is their legal right.

It is about legal protection, rather than morality.
I am sure as an individual, Mr Fankhauser would wish to apologise, but is prevented from doing so.

Yes I feel he was between a rock and a hard plate. But when people behave in a honourable way they have my respect.
>>>Yes I feel he was between a rock and a hard plate.

"hard place" isn't it ?
It's about the chain of responsibility, if he was lied to, someone else is at fault, he could be sorry but not responsible, there are always risks in life; the roof could have collapsed, he cannot be expected to check everything. Maybe they should have looked at the condition of the boiler themselves, it looked to be in a shocking condition.
The travel company found to have breached its duty of care when two children were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning on holiday in Corfu has confirmed it received compensation after the deaths.

Thomas Cook would not reveal the amount they were paid in 2013, but it has been reported to be in the region of £3.5m... http://gu.com/p/49xe3/stw
I suspect that part of the compensation paid to Thomas Cook was to pay for the legal battle against the parents.
Thomas Cook has donated half of a £3m compensation payout it received after the deaths of two British children in Corfu to the Unicef charity, the firm has said.
his refusal and then later apology was lawyer driven and looks awful

is it the BP scenario ? it is a catchphrase Americans use to say that a company is committing commercial suicide
