It was a 'catchphrase' of Joe Pasquale ... not sure if that's the origin though
it's probably a variation on the "never ending song" theme, which first appeared about 100 years ago & has been enjoyed by children (at scout camps in particular) ever since. A popular variation runs
# This is the song that never ends
Yes, it goes on and on, my friends
Some people started singing it not knowing what it was,
And they'll continue singing it forever just because� #
and the next line is a repeat of the first.
I've always associated it with Joe Pasquale as well naz.
