This was tremendous fun from start to finish - from that hilarious title with all it suggests, right to the pdm and lovely endgame. Sheer magic, Flying Tortoise!

Can't I make you understand?
You're having delusions of grandeur.
As I had just begun to type, seasoned campaigners will not have too much trouble with this one, though there's plenty of amusement, including all of the title line.
I initially made a mess of the top line, which left a space in the middle and a red herring chase in an area with, as far as I can see, no musical connections. Penny dropped when I realised I've seen this thing, and not so long ago.
Some of the adjusted clues I tracked down (for satisfaction) after the grid was full - some of them solve (within Listener tricksy limits) without making the adjustment. Now if I don't stop typing, my entry will be on the second page. Regards to all.
Monkmonk: I assure you, within a certain circle, those aren't delusions!
I'm not quite as enthusiastic: quite fun, yes, but not much of a challenge overall.
Light-hearted it certainly is. Now to track down a couple of modified clues. Thanks to Flying Tortoise. (Seems very silly typing that)
One of my rare appearances in the Friday Club! I enjoyed it, if only for that reason. Although I was utterly unaware of "the thing" (as per Z) let alone having seen it.
Nice puzzle, not much else to say -- and not much else to do now!!
A quick solve, and a good week for one as much grading of papers awaits. Not quite as over the moon about this one as RR.
The Friday club at last - frabjous day! And good fun.
Delighted to have such an easy effort tonight as I had little or no time on 4207.

Hopefully I can polish that off now, albeit a week behind the pack.
Hurrah, hurrah! I have finally made the Friday Club. After failing dismally with 4207 I really enjoyed this one. Thank you Flying Tortoise, I will now be able to use the weekend to do the garden and knit for my new grandson.
Should be plenty of Friday Night clubbing with this one. Nevertheless enjoyable and amusing and plenty of time left to enjoy the weekend. Thanks flying tortoise.
A rather careless error on 4d held me back for a while but found the mistake and with it the full solution. Only just now found how and why this all fits together - not seen the thing myself but want to!

A couple of nice clues in here, I enjoyed 33d and 34d, while the definition of 15a was surprising and brought a smile. Also the nine modified clues work fairly well (at least the ones I've found). But some clues were a bit awkward I think, especially 25d that just seems a bit meaningless on the surface. Less fun for me, I think, than for others. But for all that grumbling it fits together nicely and the good points outweigh the grumbles.
Yes, also in the Friday club this week, a nice gentle one completed over a glass of wine (or two).
Monkmonk - you think you're clever? I thought it was clever the way the editors were brought into the clues with 8 and 31 down
Well Monkmonk, I certainly understood your post even if others did not. The only thing that surprises me about it is that nobody has complained that you blew the theme of this puzzle here (albeit subtly) within 90 minutes of the puzzle becoming available!
Puzzle itself was entertaining if not spectacular, thanks FT
Extortioner -
So though I can't imagine how
I hope you're happy right now
We're newcomers to Answerbank but in the Friday club with this one.Very witty and not too gutwrenching, especially after last week's!
This fell into place straightforwardly - fun, and good for newcomers to the Listener, but I'm not so keen as RR.
As with Alekhine, diverted from last stage of 4207 to polish off this snack. Not hugely impressed. A number of the clues were very easy, all grid entries real words, top line easily discoverable etc, but didn't know the musical reference. Surprised that the AB police haven't jumped on Monkmonk.
