I know most ABers will be in bed when I post this, but I've been on a few music threads tonight and I have been listening to a selection of strange sounds. What are the best and worst cover versions you have ever heard?

Madonna's "American Pie" ...
I'm going to vote "not good" ... but only because she doesn't hit the lower notes cleanly, so it was not a good choice of song - or maybe key - for her.
She gets "die" wrong every time she sings "this'll be the day that I die" except for the one at the end which is an octave higher.

Trent Reznor has confessed that originally he was angry that Johnny Cash had covered this, as it was such a personal song to him. However, once he heard Cash's heart-wrenching version and saw the poignant video, he changed his tune.
Reznor recalled to The Sun Newspaper August 1st 2008: "The Cash thing was a couple of years into being clean I was very unsure of myself. Did I have anything to say? Could I still write music? Did anyone still care? I'd been out of the limelight for a while. I'd put the brakes on everything to try to get my life in order, to try to get healthy and stay alive. I'd been friends with Rick Rubin for several years. He called me to ask how I'd feel if Johnny Cash covered Hurt. I said I'd be very flattered but was given no indication it would actually be recorded. Two weeks went by. Then I got a CD in the post. I listened to it and it was very strange. It was this other person inhabiting my most personal song. I'd known where I was when I wrote it. I know what I was thinking about. I know how I felt. Hearing it was like someone kissing your girlfriend. It felt invasive."
It was when Reznor finally saw the video that his attitude changed. He continued: "It really, really made sense and I thought what a powerful piece of art. I never got to meet Johnny but I'm happy I contributed the way I did. It felt like a warm hug. For anyone who hasn't seen it, I highly recommend checking it out. I have goose bumps right now thinking about it."
71 years of age at the time of filming (in February 2003), Cash had serious health problems and his frailty is starkly evident in the video. He died seven months later (September 12);[5] his wife, June Carter Cash, who participated in the video, died three months after filming (May 15), closely preceding him in death. 'Hurt' is considered by many to be Cash's epitaph.[

Am off until next Tuesday and plan to do lots of nothing today and tomorrow as Mrs D has redecorating plans for the hall Wednesday and Friday. Off to Hampden for Spain v Japan on Thursday. The weekend will involve a game too. How are you sir?

Hi Duncer, I hope you enjoy the 'doing nothing' time and the football. I remember years ago that Thistle played pre-season friendlies in Northern Ireland. I can remember a game against Crusaders and another one versus Portadown but I don't think we played Linfield, mind you, I've bother remembering my own name at times! Many fond memories of Belfast. As for me, the old legs will hardly carry me the length of myself, but no complaints. I hope all is well with you and yours, and tell the missus that Wharton says "Gie the man peace, woman, the decorating can wait".
Wharton, I am still gainfully employed doing nothing, apart from listening to Marillion, and I am very good at this housebound intertia mallarkey. I haven't even read the paper yet!
Thistle toured Norn' Iron in 2002 I think, and they also played Glentoran in the old Inter Cities Fairs Cup in 1963 and, much to my delight, defeated them, although I wasn't old enough to remember it. Still, anyone beating the Glens will do me!
Would be happy to pick you up for a game some time. I'll be sure to tell Mrs D you hae given me "time off" from the decorating.
