really not sure how you can do that by accident...
Its a tax evasion thing, customs and excise...so quite heavy if caught..

First of all-fill the tank with normal diesel to dilute it down because it WILL stain your fuel lines -then you have to run your car until the tank is almost empty-then go through the refuelling route again.
As far as the law is concerned they ie Customs and Excise view it as tax evasion and the fine is based on their assumption that you have been using red diesel for as long as you have owned the vehicle so you haven't got to be a genius with a calculator to work that one out!
The only plausible defence that I know of is to have a local friendly farmer make a statement that he gave you a gallon because you had ran out miles from the nearest garage and it was only to get you out of the sh*t.
The C&E do sometimes run roadside tank dipping tests where they sample your tank via a long tube and then analyse it in their mobile lab that they use.
You can get round this by getting a ball of steel wool and poking it down the filler neck to block the dipper but the downside is that refilling your car takes forever and a day.I suppose after a while you can remove the steel wool but when that is up to you.
PS don't even think about using it on a regular basis to save money-I did and I knackered the whole engine as there are no additives or detergents in "cherry" that are present in pump fuel.
Hope that helps.
Didn,t know petrol stations sold red diesel, if they do it should be ok to buy
Hi, go back to the garage which sold you the fuel & ask them to sort out the error, did they put Red derv into a white derv tank? If so it's up to them to drain your tank & clear out the system fully.
If it was a genuine accident, I would suggest the best thing is to inform the C&E, and they should in theory give you the opportunity to pay the Duty,
Much better than getting caught,
It will stay in your fuel system for months, even with high mileage.
It can be detected without dipping BTW,
from exhaust gas analyser,

thanks for all the answers im gunna contact customs and ask what they suggest
Yep, report it. Engine damage? no. construction/ agricultral machinery run very advanced engines these days they would'nt use gas oil ( red diesel ) if it was of a lower quality.
well there's one accident I'm not likely to make!

Sara, you are unlikely to its not available at garage forecorts, its usually sold in bulk to farmers etc. which is why im trying to get my head around the i put it in by accident..
I know! if the police catch him out I assume he'll find himself in court. they'll love that "by accident" line, I'm sure.

if I'm ever on farmland I'll be sure not to fill up my car ;o)
red diesel by 'accident'?? yeah pull the other one!!
How come it is 20 worth?

Where can you accidentally buy 20 worth?
Theres a couple of garages round my way that sells red diesel in 25 ltr drums well marked for agriculture use only it doesn't come from a pump on the forecourt so you can't accidently put 20 pounds worth in??????
lol..a lot of garages here still sell marked gas oil (red diesel). in fact i've been running my car on it for five years...and was never caught.....i haven't paid tax on fuel in all that time..so get that right up ye gordon brown!!!
ps. bad news is that i sold it yesterday and am now driving a petrol car.. :0(
good news.. me 1 revenue and customs 0 LOL!
Gonzo00 = 1

All of us other saps who pay our taxes like we're legally required to do so = 0
I once heard of a truck driver who converted his vehicle to run on cherry. He built an elaborate two-tank system so that when it got dipped all appeared to be well. The second tank, which was full of cherry was concealed elsewhere on the truck.
The lengths people will go to. Hardly suprising though, is it?
To the author. If you want to save money on fuel, consider a two tank coversion for your car but with vege oil with pre-heaters, switchovers etc. It is legal
Oh, by the way, a diesel engine will run on kerosene if you can get hold of it.
Years ago I used a 50/50 Kerosene/Vege oil mix with no problems (same viscosity as white diesel)
